Games consoles
« on: 18 December 2016, 10:05:13 »

Whilst naughtily scoffing breakie in the lounge watch some trash on the telly (before I go back upstairs to carry on working  >:(), an advert for a games console (think it was Game's expensive offer for seXBOX One with Fifa) came on, promoting a discussion on console prices.  Not that I think they've gone up much - original gayStation was £200, Wii debuted at £175, even the SNES was £130 25yrs ago.

Which got us onto another discussion, about the SNES, as I bought one purely to play Super Mario World.  To this day, I maintain this remains the best platform game ever made, as yet unsurpassed.

Which also cause further discussions about other games, so here is my list of all time tops:

Platform: Super Mario World (SNES)
FPG: DOOM/DOOMII (PC)
Car racing: Grand Prix 2 (PC) / Mario Kart Wii

With regard to DOOM, obviously graphics and game engine capabilities have dramatically improved, yet nothing holds the atmosphere of the original.  And nothing else has ever ended up in my nightmares :P

Grand Prix 2 was superseded with Grand Prix 3 and 4, but these were in reality graphical updates, and to make it Windows compatible. Its Multiplayer was only local across serial cable though.

Mario Kart Wii gets a mention for its simplicity, and the online with friends capabilities until they shut the servers down :(

Carmageddon & Duke Nukem on the PC, in my days before games consoles. Also Transport Tycoon Deluxe on PC, the Chris Swayer version. Ultimate games for me  :)

In my XBOX days, has to be GTA5/Battlefield 4.

I really should fire up the console, I don't have to go back to work until 2017  :D

I paid £150 for the SNES when it was released, four games at time of release if I remember correctly

Super Mario World
Super R Type
Super Tennis
F-Zero

As much as I loved and still do love the adventures of Mario & Luigi

I think the Legend of Zelda is my favourite SNES game. :y :y :y :y :y :y

I remember buying a Datel Action Replay to play imported Japanese & American games.

Still got the original NES  & SNES consoles here. I try and ignore them as once I start playing Mariokart, everything else will get ignored for an indefinite period of time.  ;D
I have zero interest in anything more modern than that for some reason.

Megarace and the fabulous Carmageddon were great car games especially with the patch to get the real blood effects ;D ;D

Driver was another great driving game, sliding old yank tanks into whatever you fancied :y :y

Not played a console four years, still got my ps2 though, my favorite games on that were Silent Hill, Resident Evil (up to RE4 ) and the Gran Turismo series.  I remember a bit of a competition on the ABS forum for the fastest lap on the gold license round the Nurburgring, good bit of fun that went on for a while  :)
My favorite game on the PC is Battlefield 4 closely followed by Half Life 2  8).

I think games now a days try to over complicate things, add the fact that its publishers now pulling the strings so much that games come out half finished or strangled of content due to DLC.

Some of the great games i used to play

Dizzy amstrad cpc464
stunt driver atari st
tomb raider, resident evil 1 gran torismo ps1
unreal tournament, doom, diablo 2 pc

Space invaders was the first game I ever got addicted to in the late 70,s. Much better than anything around nowadays imo.

I have zero interest in anything more modern than that for some reason.
I think, as korum has also pointed out, in an effort to have better graphics/physics and be technically better, they lose the "fun" element.

I too suffer CBA with modern games - I think this is why the Wii was so popular, despite being technically inferior. Simple gameplay with lots of simple, inclusive, fun games.  For seXBOX 360 owners, the included games than come with the Kinect accessory can be a laugh, esp when you mates come over with a barrel of Watneys Party 7 ::)

If we're including the old micros from the early 80s, anything from Ultimate, and Manic Miner and JSW :)

Cant beat a session of Wii exercise to build your six pack, and then a barrel of Watneys after to celebrate.  :y ;D

I used to have a PS1 and used to play Tomb Raider...

Back then I worked 6am-2pm. The rest of the afternoon went playing tomb raider, with the odd visit to PC world to look up the cheats when I got stuck on a level  ::) ;D

TBH I don't have the time now, to spend hours playing games
