Whilst naughtily scoffing breakie in the lounge watch some trash on the telly (before I go back upstairs to carry on working
), an advert for a games console (think it was Game's expensive offer for seXBOX One with Fifa) came on, promoting a discussion on console prices. Not that I think they've gone up much - original gayStation was £200, Wii debuted at £175, even the SNES was £130 25yrs ago.
Which got us onto another discussion, about the SNES, as I bought one purely to play Super Mario World. To this day, I maintain this remains the best platform game ever made, as yet unsurpassed.
Which also cause further discussions about other games, so here is my list of all time tops:
Platform: Super Mario World (SNES)
FPG: DOOM/DOOMII (PC)
Car racing: Grand Prix 2 (PC) / Mario Kart Wii
With regard to DOOM, obviously graphics and game engine capabilities have dramatically improved, yet nothing holds the atmosphere of the original. And nothing else has ever ended up in my nightmares
Grand Prix 2 was superseded with Grand Prix 3 and 4, but these were in reality graphical updates, and to make it Windows compatible. Its Multiplayer was only local across serial cable though.
Mario Kart Wii gets a mention for its simplicity, and the online with friends capabilities until they shut the servers down
