57 vw golf tdi vacuum pump removal
« on: 20 June 2016, 13:36:06 »

Hi guys.

Got the above car in. I'm removing the camshaft cos the valve stem is poking through the top of one of the buckets and has ruined the shaft. Euros do a repair kit with camshaft and buckets assuming the guides aren't shagged.

Any ways I've timed it up removed the belt etc. But before I can remove the camshaft I've got the vacuum pump at the rear to remove. I've removed two large multi spline bolts. But I can't seem to find the others. Any clues? My boss is on half  day so I'm kinda on my own. So figured I'd ask you guys.

Thanks for reply mark but I removed the stat housing for better access and I immediately saw the bolts that I needed to get to  :y

I've got the shaft out and waiting for the new one to arrive.

The lobe for the diesel injection has a massive gouge in and one lifter has been destroyed. All others are close to giving up.

I've told them the ideal repair is to get the head off and have it tested, guides, valves checked etc but they've chosen the cheaper 'fit n hope' option.

I'll never forget my late dad, he totally stripped an old V12 Jag for a farmer friend of his, back in the 80's. I was only a nipper at the time. It wanted a new con-rod as one was ever so slightly out of tolerance. Dad argued and argued and argued saying it wouldn't run for 20 mins with it put back in, but Oh no the farmer had spent enough on it and wouldn't spend a penny more.

Dad put it back together, started it.....ran for about 1/2 hour and spat its dummy out big time! Swiftly followed by Dad spitting his out.
The Jag remained in the barn for about 20 odd years untouched, in an as new state, other than the V12 lump.

Shit engine, that won't be the same however carefully it's rebuilt... might as well save the pennies and buy a car that can actually do over a 100k without chewing itself to bits :-X

Did it make the "Glider pilot is overweight" noise, or was it not a launch winch (just a guess) ;D

Car all back together today. Seems to be running really nice.

Was my second vw timing belt and my first tdi. Was actually really nice to work on though the ali bracket the engine mount bolts to was a sod to get in and out. Mainly cos the bolts are 7ft long lol

Going to do easy work for the rest of the week and maybe another one next week.

I'll post up the pics of the shagged parts if I remember

Previous driver told me it was making a periodic squeaking noise - probably a loose drive belt or ancillary on the way out. Nothing to worry about.

It was more of a thrashy valve train falling apart noise by the time I'd finished my shift. Still running smoothly enough, mind.

Pilot weight is only really an issue for the glider. This thing would drag itself up the runway to meet him half way before admitting defeat! .. not unheard-of if you forget to chock it and put the brakes on. ::)
