xenon lights too low for mot
« on: 06 August 2009, 12:39:07 »

HELP! my ex plod car is in for MoT just now, & they are saying that the lights are aimed too low. apparently, the adjusters are seized - also a light showing on dashboard reference self levelling (i think).
So, the question is, is there a way of loosening the adjusters, without having to get new lights, which is what the garage is talking about?? Or, is this likely to be the fault of one of the sensors on the suspension?
Any thoughts/advice would be very much appreciated!

I had this problem - first - get rid of the self levelling and fit normal shocks. It's an expensive pain. Seized adjusters can be freed with a good penetrating oil :y no need to get new lights! Then adjust away..

I just had the problem, funnily enough. Theres a couple of reasons you could have the fault:

1. The sensors have come off on the suspension, theres some links on the front and rear wishbones, passenger side, is worth checking those first

2. One or both of the servo motors in the headlamps have siezed. This was my problem  :'( One of the motors was full of rust when i took it apart, i bought a pair of used headlamps off a guy on here and luckily the servos on his are fine, swapped them over, job done!

Its dead easy to whip the headlamps out so you can have a proper look if its not the sensors on the chasis, theres a guide on here if you need it. The only fiddly bit is the lower 8mm bolt that holds the headlamp in.

Cheers!

Ahh, that'll explain why the Tech2 was less than impressed with them, Lee A. :y

Not the first motor I've seen in that state. Glad you've got to the bottom of it!

Self levelling suspension & self levelling headlights are two completely different animals and are no way whatsoever connected to each other.  :y

to clarify, when I mentioned the self leveling thing, I was referring to the system for the xenon lights, not self leveling suspension. I'll have a look at it over the weekend & let you know whats happening.
Thanks for all the help so far

to continue the saga - I've been out of country - car failed MoT on headlamp aim being too low (xenons). when stationary, I've now noticed that the aim seems to constantly move up & down. apparently the two level sensors are ok. does anyone have any suggestions what to do now?

Bracket bent at the rear. Mine got jacked under it by a dodgy tyre shop. I stuck a screwdriver in the gap between arm & sensor and just "adjusted" it back down.

Have seen similar resolved by clever application of a washer under one or other of the securing screws, between it and the bodyshell mounts, thus either lifting/lowering/moving the light output to suit - not that I would ever condone such scurrillous behaviour, you understand.....   ;)

just a thought i have hid, on the near side front wishbone at the back of the arm, i have a little arm, which goes to a sensor, i assume this is something to do with knowing the height of the front of the car. so could be connected.

Correct, but there are always default settings that the lights would adjust to in lieu of corrects positions from the sensors....
