General Car Chat / Merry Christmas.
« on: 18 December 2016, 19:49:23 »
Gentlemen, thank you so very much for all the invaluable help I have obtained from Forum members: without it, my poor Omega would not have seen this Christmas and probably not the last one either.
Merry Christmas to all, and a Happy and drama-free New Year.  :y :y :y

General Car Chat / In praise of ECP - yes, really!
« on: 15 December 2016, 20:48:54 »
Today's offer was for a 2 Ton trolley jack, list price £89.99, usual price £76.80 and today's offer £24.99 including delivery!
I ordered one at just after 11 AM and it arrived just after 2 PM - pretty good service, I think.
Never heard of the make before - TopTech - has anybody on here?

Omega General Help / Computer help needed.
« on: 09 December 2016, 16:46:17 »
I have an elderly PC with Windows XP as its Operating System - yes, I know, but Santa won't bring me a new one because.....
Anyway, it is now slow and clogged up; if I do a re-install of the OS, will it replace ONLY the OS and not affect any other files and folders, or must I try to save them elsewhere to replace after the re-install?

Omega General Help / Snow joke....
« on: 09 November 2016, 05:53:46 »
Unbidden, the "snow" light near the gear selector (auto box, of course) has lit up. No amount of pressing of the snow button puts it out, but fortunately it is telling lies - the car drives quite normally, starting i first gear as usual.
Any ideas, gents?  ???

General Discussion Area / Messing about with the clocks.
« on: 03 November 2016, 07:06:30 »
Can anyone come up with a convincing argument in favour of this biannual stupidity of changing the clocks? I mean a REAL argument, not the usual trite claptrap trotted out every time this topic is debated and fails to convince anyone. SO much time and effort wasted performing this pointless task in homes and businesses throughout the country, for zero benefit - we do not, never ever, get any more hours of daylight; the sun won't co-operate!
I recently saw a TV programme about the railways, where they actually did a sensib;e thing and unified time across the whole of the UK, nut even that brought about wholesale protests in the West Country! Apparently, the town hall clock in Bristol (I think) still has a clock with TWO minute hands, one for ocal time and the other for "railway" time....

General Car Chat / The dreaded MOT!
« on: 13 September 2016, 17:00:59 »
Well, not SO dreaded, as for the second year running, a clear pass with no advisories, although I did use a bottle of Cataclean first, plus a tankful of Shell V-Power and an Italian tune-up to help it sail through the emissions check!   8)

General Discussion Area / Upgrading from Windows XP
« on: 31 August 2016, 20:21:54 »
I am still on an elderly PC running Winows XP, which Microsoft withdrew support from a couple of years ago. That in itself hasn't been problematical, but now both Dropbox and Yahoo Messenger will discontinue my accounts as of today.
Yahoo will not let me continue unless I upgrade to at least the Vista OS and Dropbox are much the same.
If I obtain either Vista or Windows 7, can I just install the OS safely, i.e. without losing any of my present files, or is it more complex than that?
Any help/advice will be much appreciated, gents.

Omega General Help / ECP offers. Why don't they like me?
« on: 23 July 2016, 20:31:17 »
Do ECP actually want business? I tried several times today to buy two 5 litre cans of 10-40 semi-synthetic oil on a two for one offer, filled in the form religiously and got right down to the PayPal bit - then it stalled!
They clearly don't want my custom, as this has happened before, some months back.....

Omega General Help / Information disply brightness.
« on: 28 April 2016, 15:55:51 »
A fairly trivial problem, gents, and one which may be more in my perception than real, but said display is becoming hard to read in daylight and impossible when the sun is out. I am SURE - in my head, at least - that it was brighter once! Is it possible that the bulbs dim with age; they are tungsten, yes? Would it be a simple job for a simple bloke to replace them?

Omega General Help / Help with Check message, please.

Today I got "LOW BEAM FLD/VISION".
Can anyone tell me what it means, what to look for or what has gone wrong, please?

Omega General Help / Fitting a towbar.
« on: 29 March 2016, 07:55:13 »
Unless I can't find it (quite possible), there doesn't seem to be a guide to fitting a towbar.
I have a '51 Reg. 2.6 petrol saloon auto: are there suitable holes for adding a towbar or is drilling necessary, and where would be the best place to source a towbar and/or kit, please?

It’s a long story, but I have a caravan in storage on a site near Wareham, Dorset. It has been in storage for a couple of years due to a combination of health and financial difficulties which prevented me from enjoying it on pitch for leisure.
The site (Lookout Holiday Park) has been taken over, and the new owner wants most caravans removed from the site by April 1st. this year.
The biggest problem I have is that I no longer have any means of towing it back home to Witham, Essex – about 180 mile trip.
I realise this is a big ask, but could anyone help, or suggest a solution, please?
I have not had much notice from the new owner to arrange removal/transport to my home.

General Car Chat / Seat belt slow to rewind.
« on: 06 February 2016, 18:09:17 »
Not of life-altering concern, just annoying. Why, after a few years, do once-rapidly rewinding seat belts get slower and slower to go back home when released? I've noticed this on several different cars that I've owned; they all end up needing to be jogged and persuaded back. Does the rewind reel get clogged with fluff or something?

General Car Chat / Bah, humbug!
« on: 26 November 2015, 16:31:14 »
No, not humbug at all, actually. I have been helped enormously by so many forum members (you know who you are...) that I just wanted to say a HUGE Christmas thank you to you all and wish you all the good things that you wish yourselves over the festive season; without your valuable help, I would not still be an Omega owner.
Thanks a million.
