2.5 TD Automatic Gearbox Slipped
« on: 26 June 2016, 16:10:17 »

Hi Guys,

I mistakenly put this topic in the general chat area.
My autobox slipped earlier on after going over a pot hole and was as if it was stuck in neutral. Had to pull over , select park and after a few minutes, select drive and it took off again. Is there something to be concerned about, as I'm new to automatics?

The automatic box in the 2.5 TD's is a little bit of a weak point. When GM supplied BMW with the automatic transmissions, they gave them the stronger AR35 box. When BMW supplied the engines to GM, GM fitted them with the weaker AR25 box, meaning that the engine had to be detuned slightly. Even so, they're till not the best.  I have a scruffy 2.5 TD auto with 163k on the clocks, it's had a gearbox replacement before, and I'm sure that the one in it now is a bit fragile.

I've no idea what would cause the symptoms you're describing though.  Would tbe pot hole have been severe enough to have dislodged the selector mechanism slightly? So by selecting park and drive again realigned it? I'm just thinking out loud. I'd be interested to know the answer though.

So the auto box used in the 325/525 TDS was a GM box afterall?
I did check the selector as advised by another member and looks intact, but can do with a good clean up. I'll be on the look out for a used AR35 now.
Thanks

So I'm told, yes! Although it wasn't known as an AR35 when fitted to the Beemers, but as far as I know, it's pretty much the same.

How long have you had the car? If it's driving ok then I maybe wouldn't worry too much yet. Is it high mileage?

Forgot to mention, an ATF change and filter clean/replace is the first action to take. This cures many of the auto box issues of this type. :y

I've had the car for 2 years now and only covered about 4000 miles since I bought it. It has 154000 miles on the clock. I thought about draining the oil out earlier on. The strange thing though, is that there are no oil leaks on the driveway, buy the sump looks wet with oil.
