I thought about an add-on that allows you to close the windows and/or sunroof with the remote, but having to press it only once (or twice) rather than hold down the button. I remember discussing this a while back over on the dark side (before this place existed) but I forgot about it before getting round to it.

The original thread is here, I'm just wondering if anyone, and Mark in particular, got any further with this. It seems if we can get a little timer circuit made up it will be an easy mod with only a few easily accessible wires needing to be soldered.

Personally I'd prefer a system where activating the deadlocks also activates the closure feature, but the exact implementation details aren't a big issue.

BTW The eBay seller who was selling such units for Astras, Vectras, etc doesn't seem to be selling them any more, or at least I can't find anything along these lines.

Omega General Help / Vectra B GSi steering wheel
« on: 27 September 2007, 11:40:13 »
Does anyone know if the 3-spoke steering wheel and airbag fitted to late Vectra B GSi will fit the Omega? They come up on fleabay now and again and I think it would be a nice addition to the MV6, as they're a bit more sporty than the 4-spoke ones. Since the Omega shares its 4-spoke wheel with the more sedate models of the Vectra B, I'm suspecting both the physical fitment and electrical connections are interchangeable, including the steering wheel controls.

Omega General Help / Part numbers for air vent and MID bulbs
« on: 30 August 2007, 10:53:11 »
Hi guys

I've finally decided to sort out the lack of illumination of my heater vent controls, so it looks like I need to replace all 4 bulbs. I took one out in the vain hope of buying them from Halfords, but no such luck -- they're only 0.5W and the lowest power Halfords do are 1.2W I think. Seems it's a dealer-only bulb so a part number would save some hassle (and risk of getting the wrong part) when I go to the local stealers.

Likewise, I think one of my MID bulbs is out, as it's a little duller on the right side. Again a part number would be good -- don't suppose it's the same bulb as the headlight switch, as I have a spare one of those?

One more question: Is the rear air vent control supposed to be illuminated too? Mine isn't, but I'm not sure if there's a bulb to replace in there.

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Rear subframe bushes
« on: 09 August 2007, 10:43:07 »
Hey guys

One of my rear subframe bushes has a fair bit of play in it, which may be contributing to a pull under braking (although there is a clunk related to the steering that is yet to be investigated). So it looks like I have to replace both of them.

Has anyone done it, and how long did it take? Looks like a big job! Also, where's the best place to get replacements -- trade club maybe?

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Installing rear dampers
« on: 24 May 2007, 14:05:25 »
I've ordered a pair of rear dampers which will hopefully be here by the weekend so I can fit them then. Are there any special tools or tricks I need beforehand? I will be doing the job at my folks' so have the usual ramps, axle stands, sockets, spring compressors, big-ass steel mallet, angle grinder etc.

Normally I wouldn't tackle a job like this... but after my success fixing the stripped plug thread and doing my cam gaskets etc I'm feeling a little more confident :O

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Rear dampers for MV6
« on: 19 May 2007, 18:11:01 »
The back end of my Omega has recently started to feel really floaty, I have to take corners much more slowly than I normally would, and when going over bumps at any speed it feels like the back is oscillating up and down! It's bad enough that I'm going to stop driving it until it's sorted... back to the BMW and it's 18 MPG for now ::).

My first port of call is the rear dampers. The strange thing is that it appears to have got much worse very suddenly, rather than the gradual decline in handling I'd expect with worn dampers. Saying that, the Omega was off the road for 3 weeks while I repaired a stripped plug thread, so maybe it's the fact that I've been driving only the BMW in that time has highlighted just how bad the Omega's handling has become! There are no unusual noises that I can hear.

My car has the self-levelling suspension, which personally I consider to be a bit pointless in a saloon, especially since it's rarely ever got anything substantial in the boot except the dual-fuel tank, which is right over the axle anyway. Is it worthwhile just dumping it and fitting normal dampers? Seems there's a price premium of c.£100 per damper for these :O.

Can anyone recommend any brands/suppliers, along with prices? I'm not looking for anything fancy, but obviously I'd like to go for at least factory level of handling, which on the MV6 are a bit stiffer than normal Omega dampers I believe. Are they on trade club, and if so how much?

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Woohoo... car is back on the road!
« on: 12 May 2007, 18:13:11 »
Some of you will remember my woes with a plug that blew out of the head, and subsequently turned out to be a stripped thread :(.

I had a bit of a nightmare trying to replace it, needed a Heli-coil but I couldn't get it threaded. I was on the verge of giving up (the damn rain didn't help my progress either... typical Scottish summer  >:() but gave it another go today and had success within a few tries.

Between taking shelter from spells of rain I managed to get it all back together. I was a little worried that I'd forgotten something or done something wrong along the way, especially considering I stripped it all 3 weeks ago :o. Got in started it up and the check engine light went off as normal - good start. However it was running mega rough, like on 3 cylinders! Was starting to get worried, gave it a little blip of the gas to no avail, but after a few seconds more it ran a lot better but not perfect -- like on 5 cylinders. Now I was starting to worry that the plug I'd Heli-coiled wasn't firing, but after a little longer it evened out and is now running perfectly  :D.

I can only assume the initial roughness was caused by the fuel line being drained thus the pressure was too low for all cylinders until it had a chance to re-pressurise. Here's hoping now that everything continues to run well.

While I was in there I changed both sets of rocker gaskets, changed the HBV, changed the plugs and leads. Those were needing done anyway so the stripped thread wasn't that much extra work. I just pray that the cam gaskets don't leak now, I checked everything twice, particularly the half-moons. I also hope the new HBV fixes the water leak I had, otherwise I'll have to start looking elsewhere for that.

Many thanks go out to Mark and Laidback66 for both advice and the loan of the Heli-coil kit and replacement bolts for the inlet bridge after I dropped one and it disappeared into the ether :y

Here are a few pics I took along the way. I must say it's all looking pretty good in there condition-wise, from my limited knowledge, so that's reassuring.

Omega General Help / 'dangle berries'... stripped plug thread!
« on: 28 April 2007, 18:23:13 »
Ho hum... have just spent the best part of the last 6 hours :O working on the Omega. Mainly to repair the problem of the spark plug that blew out the hole a few weeks ago resulting in me getting recovered home, but while I was at it I decided I may as well go the whole hog -- new rocker gaskets, new HBV and new plugs and leads.

Have now got the new gaskets and HBV fitted, and new leads in place, many thanks to the guys who wrote the how-tos for these. Also checked the breathers are still clear which they are. When I was torquing (sp?) up the plugs, 5 of them nipped up fine but the last one -- the one that had blown out -- tightens up just to the point of resistance then lets go  >:(. So the thread's stripped, having never encountered this before where do I go from here? Incidentally it was still sitting on the end of the lead, although the lead's insulator was destroyed, so I guess the stripped thread explains the cause of it coming out.

Other problems encountered (or created) along the way are: Lost one of the bolts for the inlet bridge; broke the electrical part of the rear multi-ram controller (snapped off when I tried to remove the connector); and broke the plastic part of the cruise control cable when trying to disconnect the throttle cable.  :(

So I guess I'm going to have to leave it for now until I can at least get the spark plug thread sorted and another bolt for the inlet bridge (or find the old one). The rear multi-ram and cruise control I can obviously live without for now.

Any advice appreciated... I'm gonna head out on my R1 soon to take my mind off that damn car!

Just phoned the dealer for the bits I need to do the rocker cover gaskets this weekend (and change plugs, leads and HBV -- all of which I already have). They have the gaskets and O-rings in stock, but as sod's law would have it don't have the sealant :(

If anyone has some left over, or knows of a dealer who has it in stock, that would be most helpful! I can order some in but really I want to get the work done on Saturday so it probably won't arrive in time. Running 150 miles back and forward to my folks' place in the 840 is killing me at 18 MPG :O not to mention it's damn close to needing an inspection 2 (major) service, time to get the luxobarge on the go again!

Cheers
Paul.

Omega General Help / Spark plug blew out from the engine!
« on: 16 April 2007, 15:02:20 »
I was driving to my folks' on Saturday when the car started making a rather unpleasant noise. I was just going through the centre of Glasgow on the M8 so pulled off at the next junction to have a look. Switched off, popped the bonnet to have a look but nothing obvious. Started it up again to the sound of an awful popping noise on every revolution. Still couldn't work out the cause so I called for recovery (first time I'd ever had to do so since I started driving at 17).

The guy arrived some time later, and after some prodding around discovered that one of the spark plugs had come out (middle plug on the passenger side). In doing this it had also wrecked the lead, so no chance of a quick repair by replacing the plug. So the car was trailered to my folks' place and I used my BMW to get back home -- glad I've got two cars then.

So as it stands, hopefully I can just replace the plugs and leads, and it'll be OK. It's possible the thread has been damaged, in which case it'll need rethreaded first, but that's not really a big deal. My main fear is that part of the plug has broken and got into the cylinder, although the mechanic who recovered me said it's likely that the combustion chamber pressure would have blown it outwards. Just need to wait and see.

I'm quite surprised at this happening, the plugs were last changed about 20,000 miles ago so it's unlikely to have been caused by incorrect tightening. Has anyone else ever experienced such a thing? If so do I have anything to fear regarding damage to the engine?

I was planning on replacing the rocker gaskets and fitting new plugs and leads anyway so this will just hasten my need to do so -- probably next weekend if I can get the parts and the weather is good. Here's hoping it runs OK afterwards as I really don't fancy the prospect of having to remove the head.

Omega General Help / Secondary air injection pump
« on: 11 January 2007, 15:34:38 »
I'm getting a sort of buzzing noise on startup that sounds like an electric motor with failing bearings. After reading posts on here I'm suspecting the secondary air injection pump (the one in the front nearside wing) so I want to disconnect it to check. Is there any way of doing so without having to get into the wheel arch? I was thinking maybe a fuse can be removed, hopefully without disabling anything else that may be important.

The noise has been there since I bought the car, I just never spent much time investigating it as it's reasonably subtle (especially with my crappy exhaust!) and it goes away reasonably quickly. Strangely though it seems to change frequency if I rev the engine, does this sound normal for a secondary air pump?

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Need advice removing rear headrest mounts
« on: 24 February 2007, 12:59:50 »
How do you remove these things? I've tried turning them, pressing in various parts, then resorted to brute force which has resulted in me destroying one! I've removed everything else from the shelf no problem (there's always one thing that's really stubborn!)

My MV6 being a non-facelift of course. If so what differences did VX make over the years (stiffness, ride height etc).

I'm thinking of replacing my ageing springs and dampers, and was wondering if it's worth going for parts from the facelift MV6.

Also I have self-levelling suspension, can I just dump it and disconnect the pump?

Omega General Help / Air vents dial illumination
« on: 27 January 2007, 01:56:24 »
Are the controls for opening and closing the air vents supposed to be illuminated on a 1998 MV6? None of mine currently light up but I've seen a pic with them illuminated. If so first check is the bulbs, where are they located (I assume it uses a light guide type thing to channel the light to the right places).
