Auto box fluid change query.
« on: 21 April 2012, 15:45:08 »

Hi guys, have arranged to have the AT fluid changed in the next week or so on the 03 2.2 estate is there anything else I need to get for this apart from fluid ? I am wondering if there is a filter & perhaps a washer required for the drain plug ,a Ford mechanic (daughters best friends husband) said he will do it for me as he has access to all equipment all I need to do is supply parts.

The two gaskets, mine were baked on hard. I don't know about the possibility of using some sort of sealant though. Someone else might know? You could get a new filter, i did for mine, but other people have cleaned them in petrol and refitted.

No drain plug mate - either suck it out through level plug or drop sumps to drain. ;)

Copper washer on the filler plug.
I bought a new one when did mine but sure you could just get it very hot with a gas torch and re anneal it.

2 sumps so need 2 gaskets although you could use instant gasket.Filter screen although again this could be re-used with a thorough wash out in paraffin.

Only thing thats not in the guide is buy a big bottle of shampoo, as you will get ATF everywhere  ;D

If I was changing it I still wouldn't need shampoo as  I favour the Yul Brenner look!!

Using a garden kill-a-spray will do wonders when refilling  :y And when removing the sumps just be very careful not to spill any, it is possible to get this done without bathing in ATF.

Black flange sealant, e.g. Loctite 5910 or similar will do instead of gaskets if they turn out difficult to get  :y

Consider syphoning the fluid out as mentioned elsewhere, as it will make it less messy when the sumps come out  :y

Sorry, should say that all the fluid won't come out, and that some spillage is inevitable, but it will certainly help  :y

Not to forget the autobox is not made by GM
It's used on other makes ie I think bmw use them also
I do believe the parts supplied by JP autotransmissions will be the same as supplied by the dealer
In fact wouldn't surprise me if they supply the VX dealers
And don't forget the 25% discount to OOF members :y
