is my power steering pump on its way out
« on: 17 December 2007, 21:28:07 »

symptoms are when parking for example and switching from left to right lock or right to left quickly the steering goes heavy for a few secs then goes back to normal again. normal driving i have no problems and tends to be a bit intermitant when parking cant see any thing i do different to cause it.

The car has done this since i owned it is this normal for a omega? as no other car ive owned  has done it before.

not going to fix in a hurry as i can live with it but just another thing to add to the list for a boring sunday to kill.

Might be worth just checking the Aux Belt  ?? Unlikely but IF it is not to the correct tension then the pump MIGHT be slipping under extreme load.. ? a new tensioner/belt will be cheaper and easier than a full pump change so may be worth 5 minutes just in case ??

cheers will check whats the correct tension or shall i just swag it?

i normally go off quarter of a turn on the longest length, for a flat belt and no more deflection than its thickness on a 'v' belt

mine also does this when parked if you turn the wheel fast but is fine all the rest of the time and has done this from 20000 miles genuine bought direct from the N I plod so i don,t think there is much wrong with your pump hth

I had to change a pump on my 2.5 this weekend, leaking from the rear face under load. Don't be put off by TIS telling you to remove the air con compressor, it does not interfere with pump removal.

It is actualy quite straightforward to change, aux belt & pump pulley off, one hoseclip and one screwed in pressure fitting, three screws holding the bracket to the left of the pump and two for the pump itself. Makes a heck of a mess though, it's not easy to drain the fluid.

This was a 98 2.5 mini facelift, don't know if the installation varies.
