When I changed my ATF I'd done really well & didn't spill a drop untill I came to refilling the bugger. I filled mine via a tube running up to the engine bay & a funnel. All was well untill the tube came out of the side of the 'box. :(  :y

...I may be wrong but I didn't think a garage could do any work without permission! Just you of interest, what do they charge for the test? Is it the full DoT rate or discounted?

A local motor bike shop fitted new pads for me twice at MOT time without asking & charged me for the privilege. They just quoted safety at me. I let it go the first time but the 2nd time I put them right. It's them who's lost further trade

I'd say if theres nothing between the two cars when you see them (ie assuming that one isn't a dog where the other is fine..)go for the manual.

The auto box is well known for trashing its thrust washer (replacement 'box time) - the box on mine went at about 88k (previous owner had a second hand box rebuilt and installed).

Don't know of any issues other than obv having to replace clutches, but I'd say the driving experience will be better with the manual, and you'll get marginally better consumption.

But I'd say go for the auto every time. There's 150 000 miles on my car & the thrust washers in the gearbox are still where Vauxhall put them. The driving experience is far far better for me without fannying about with 3 pedals.
I can think of issues with manuals. There's been a few requests here for another dual mass fly wheel. They're only about £800 a pop new.

I've just been reading through a 4 page thread, and it is driving me nuts that everybody quotes the previous comment, so even just adding a smiley to the thread generates up to half a page of quote each time >:(

Quotes are useful at the right time and place but not required for every reply.

But a lot are!  ;D

......and I don't see why kids have to have mobile phones either.   I'm not against progress but I had a hour journey back home from school which I managed without a mobi.

We didn't 'ave no tellies or shoes or bedclothes.  We med us own fun in them days.  Do you know, when I were a lad you could get a tram down into t'town, buy three new suits an' an ovvercoat, four pair o' good boots, go an' see George Formby at t'Palace Theatre, get blind drunk, 'ave some steak an' chips, bunch o' bananas an' three stone o' monkey nuts an' still 'ave change out of a farthing.

We'd lots o' things in them days they 'aven't got today - rickets, diptheria, Hitler and my, we did look well goin' to school wi' no backside in us trousers an' all us little 'eads painted purple because we 'ad ringworm.

They don't know they're born today!!!

My Son had a set amount of lessons for his 17th  and we bought him a car for his 18th, some would see that as being too generous but what he got was a 12 year old car that was MOT'd and roadworthy, the rest was up to him.

Similar to us then. He paid for his own lessons - he was working by then. The car is a £500 M reg Astra F & we put a bit towards the scandelous cost of insurance. He has though been a classic example of why insurance costs are as they are.  >:(

As for scooters.....cant say I am convinced that a 16 year old has the common sense to bet  loose with one :-?

I suppose each kid should be taken on his/her own merit however it was a mistake to put my lad on the road at 19 yrs. He's been sadly lacking in any common sense at all.  :-?
