Looking like we are in for quite a windfall from a relative who died a few weeks ago & left wifey a property in SW2 valued at around £400,000. We have had caravans for a number of years & always fancied a motorhome anyone on here up to speed on them ?

As a caravan owner/user I have several friends with motorhomes, and when we toured New Zealand we hired one so a few points worth considering, perhaps...
1. Cost - much higher costs as you are buying a truck that has been modified by sticking the accomodation on the back. It WILL require taxing, motor insurance as well as habitation insurance, servicing costs can be high as many independent garages don't have the facilities to get a truck that high onto lifts.
2. Ease of use - many motorhomes are quite a bit smaller internally than a caravan, so can feel cramped. If you have friends in there is usually very limited space for seating more than a total of 4.
3. Mobility - there are two sides to this... a) If you tend to stay in one place for a while and use it as a base to visit other places (hub and spoke sort of idea) then it can be very inconvenient to have to pack up everything to go out for the day, and many supermarket car parks have very limiting height rules - this can be overcome by taking a small car with you .. but that is yet a further cost, and not a small one !! b) If you continually move from place to place (as we did when touring New Zealand) then a motorhome is ideal as the setting up/ preparing to move times are much smaller than preparing a 'van to move
4. Facilities - due to the limitation on size many motorhomes have small dual-purpose showers/toilets, smaller hobs/ovens and very little worktop space. If you buy one with an "over cab" space think about the ease of actually getting up there to use it !! IME the "ladders" are extremely flimsy and not easy to use !
There are those that swear by motorhomes, and those that wouldn't touch one, I think they both have a place, dpending on the lifestyle you want. I wouldn't swap my van/towcar for the type of holidays we have in UK/Europe, but there is no way I would use such an arrangement to tour New Zealand/Australia, that would be a motorhome everytime.

Like Entwood I have a caravan(6 berth twin axle) and we also use father inlaws Bessacar 6 berth campervan,the points made are very valid as camper has much less space than the caravan even though externally as big,I do prefer the campervan in France as they are very geared towards them but in UK I prefer the caravan,biggest problem with the camper is that you have forward plan small villages due to physical size of the camper and finding somewhere to park 30 ft length can be awkward .

Also most European ones are lightly built on chassis that are crap from new... Citroen/Peugeot/Fiat.

We saw a few (4-5 total) while we had our six month homeless period and they looked the absolute business. You'd better have your reversing A-Game on though as you can't (as easily) get one of those cheaty motor-mover jobbies. You can buy 'Lightweight' american ones that have been converted for UK use and clock in under the 3.5T limit. For example:

I don't think that's generally a problem for most of old farts here, though I'm pretty you need a medical to retain the 7.5 ton part when you reach 70

Other than myself and Tinnie, I think all the old farts on here can drive more or less what they like. ;D
One word of warning on the car thing. AFAIK the tow hitch design where the car is pulled along on its own wheels are illegal on mainland Europe and Les Fuzz will be happy to help you empty your bank account ::) so you'll need a trailer too.

Yes that's included in C1E , the only stipulation for me is a certificate from my GP when I reach 70 years of age, if not obtained I lose C1E.

I believe what DG was saying is that a car on an A frame, behind a motor home, counts as on a trainer for the purposes of the law - whether it's on an A frame or a trailer.

This has reminded me that I need to renew my licence which expires on the 25th and I'd forgotten. ::)
Problem is that I'm also away for a few days and won't be able to put my application in until I get home and can get my passport number. :(

Whether it's an a frame, a trailer or a car, as long as your max weight is less than 12 tonne, it's fine.....as far as I can see.
I certainly wouldn't like to try it, entitled or not. Fine on motorways and some a roads, but I think I'd be a bit dodgy on smaller roads.

Got to spend a few bob on the flat yet, new kitchen bathroom, windows doors etc. Make it more attractive belonged to wifes stepbrother , slightly eccentric character never did anything to the place as it is would sell for about £330,000 intend spending about £25,000 on it before going on the market for £425,000. In its favour is where it is + he renewed the lease last year so it has 124 year lease.

Wrong.......again. Diesel particulates pollute the immediate area. CO2 from petrol engines cause global warming and kill everything. And your huge petrol engine, coupled with the shit your other ugly car kicks out, are doing more than most to ensure the deaths of black babies. :)

Having been employed by Her Majesty for virtually all my working life I have no problems with paying my share , just hate all the bloody scroungers who sit on their arses & expect it all handed to them on a plate.

Huge six figure inheritance and you want to go out in a motorhome!? Are you mad? :o :o :o
The cost alone of maintaining one, would buy a huge amount of hotels. Plus add in depreciation etc, you could spend 25% of what you would on a motorhome on a very nice car and enjoy the drive to a hotel and use the facilities there. The annual running cost of one of those things, you could pay for a hotel for 2 weeks easy.
Not many motorhomes have swimming pools, sauna's, hot tubs along with a waitress to bring you drinks. ;)
Better still, pop suitcase in back of your V8 Merc and take that. Fuel and hotels won't be an issue with new funds.

it means we can get off the beaten track,
3 weeks last year up to the artic circle we spent 4 nights on campsites, the rest of the time, we stayed in woodland clearings and out of the way places.

Do all of those things already ,and to be quite honest you either like camping & caravanning or you don't, when we go abroad we fly anyway cost & maintenance is not a problem. Just want to see parts of the UK we've never been to before.

Huge six figure inheritance and you want to go out in a motorhome!? Are you mad? :o :o :o
The cost alone of maintaining one, would buy a huge amount of hotels. Plus add in depreciation etc, you could spend 25% of what you would on a motorhome on a very nice car and enjoy the drive to a hotel and use the facilities there. The annual running cost of one of those things, you could pay for a hotel for 2 weeks easy.
Not many motorhomes have swimming pools, sauna's, hot tubs along with a waitress to bring you drinks. ;)
Better still, pop suitcase in back of your V8 Merc and take that. Fuel and hotels won't be an issue with new funds.
You usually mention out emptying the toilet ..... ::)
Oh yeh forgot that, while I'm here... blocking up the roads, causing queues, bad for the environment, stupid campsite rules and I'm still yet to stand up straight in one, without my head hitting roof. ;D

Will also say I've driven a few of them, Gramps Tunnie (RIP :'() many years ago was looking to buy one, much to my dislike and I suggested hotels but he wanted one. So I took him around to look at loads and we drove them.
I took a few for a test drive, not cheap things, for something decent he was looking at splashing £40/50/60k. :o
The driving experience was van like, slow, underpowered, lots of gear shifts for a change in engine sound/note but did not appear to translate into much movement forwards.
Also, because they are loaded up with cooking pots, plates, cups, glasses, tins, food, jars, all the usual kitchen stuff etc. The amount of metallic bumping/knocking/clanging coming from the cabin area made the drive intolerable in my view. Hit a pot hole or even rough section and whole thing shook and crashed about.
So you get a horrible drive, which is slow and dull and zero fun. You arrive at destination where you park 3 feet from someone else, not allowed do campfires usually/games etc. Have to cook your own food, wash up your own plates and toilet etc. Not sure I will ever get the appeal!

we have a Landrover camper, ex ambulance converted to camper,
it means we can get off the beaten track,
3 weeks last year up to the artic circle we spent 4 nights on campsites, the rest of the time, we stayed in woodland clearings and out of the way places.

not really, we did 5500 miles in it on that trip, 9000 total last year, we camped out in it new years eve for the last 3 years, went to a wedding last sat, parked the camper at the reception, crawled into it late evening,
oh we have a bog onboard.
I really dislike other people on campsites, the petty rules etc,

Things have changed a lot obviously, won't comment on everything but as for the 3 foot comment it is the six metre rule on proper sites, we both love it & have had everything over the last 45 years from a tiny tent to our present 26 foot twin axle caravan, believe me after my time in the forces this is not " roughing it "😎 We can afford to eat out if we wish but like to cook & eat outdoors preferably, but as I said understand it is simply not for some people.

I have to say, being able to self-cater is great on holiday, especially when abroad and the local markets yield lots of interesting produce to use. I quickly get bored of mediocre hotel food or having to eat out every night. My choice of camper might be a canvas one in the boot of the Omega, but there is a lot to be said for self-sufficiency on holiday, IMHO.

I rarely stay in Hotels for pleasure for this very reason. We nearly always go self catering, irrespective of whether Mrs TB has any intention to cook.
We go to Cyprus at least annually, always a villa, just so we don't have to be regimental like in hotels. And the local tavernas are always a million times better than bland hotel food, particularly the all-inclusive tasteless shite you get.
We still occasionally take the tent away. Generally I make her cook just one night, as there is something unique about camping al-fresco, even if its just bangers and mash. I completely agree with Tilbo on that. Though we then usually eat out most of the time.
But I cant be dealing with caravans or campers. Too cramped. Too inconvenient getting it there and back. That's before you take into account costs.
