Title: newbie MV6 owner
Post by: 456lbft on 24 March 2019, 17:39:49
Hello, i am looking forward to finding out more from you Omega chaps, having spent a long time as an Autobahnstormer and having been involved with Lotus Carltons since building and racing one in the late 1990s.  I have now finally graduated to an Omega B, having just purchased what i hope is a nicely looked after MV6 3.2 auto.  I'll post up some images once I pick it up this week.

Finally got to drive my MV6 home after sorting all the paperwork/insurance etc.  After much trepidation over the past few days, I was relieved to find that despite a couple of little niggles (the main one being no A/C on nearly the hottest day of the year so far) I am not disappointed at all. In fact I shouldn't have worried because it drives just like an underpowered and underbraked Lotus Carlton, which I am quite familiar with.  Being an auto too, it is much less physical, and I'm looking forward to a longer drive where I can learn more about it. Pictures will follow at the weekend once I get time to get to grips with the process of posting them.

Sorry about the pictures, they previewed on my home pc fine, (after a lot of mucking about with file sizes and so on) and also now appear at work too on this thread on my work PC, that's probably because it's my Dropbox I suppose, although they are in a public folder. Maybe I should host them somewhere else.
Yes it is the classic car auctions car formerly owned by a Vauxhall Dealership in Pontypridd.

Yes I will be doing my best to preserve it, and I've seen how Lotus Carlton's end up :'( so rustproofing is on the list of things to do. First up is to establish whether the AC is working or not before the really hot weather is upon us again. It could also do with brake discs and pads, as it has obviously not been used much so they are quite rusty. I have to be careful with the budget, because that was blown on the purchase price, so it'll be step by step. Cam belts were done not many miles ago, but should I do them again as they deteriorate with age as well as mileage? It was serviced before the auction and has got 12 months MOT, so mainly i just want to drive it. :)

In my opinion, factory rust prevention on omega isn't even as good as carltons (which i drove for 18 years prior to omega and did all work on myself ,bar the MOTs ) LCs had the plastic body kit which did trap water , so rust proofing is worth the time and effort (many will disagree  ::))

A cheap way(what many do on OOF) to do the belt is to buy 2 sets clicky link (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Timing-belt-kit-Vauxhall-Vectra-Calibra-Cavalier-2-5-Omega-2-5-2-6-3-0/222619968296)
2 sets because you need 3 roller bearings and re-use your original back plate  ;)

IF your roller bearings are ok,no wear ,you could just buy a gates belt about £25 (5453XS belt) trouble is you won't know the condition of rollers until you have it in bits  ;D unless you have a receipt proving the entire kit has been done (and that still won't prove it actually got fitted ,yes i am a cynic  :D)

a complete gates kit is £120 clicky (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OPEL-OMEGA-B-3-2-Timing-Belt-Kit-01-to-03-Y32SE-Set-Gates-5636385-9201887-New/232562402624?fits=Model%3AOmega+B&epid=942109094&hash=item3625cca540:g:EP0AAOSwSQFaC4i4)

this kit K015453XS £40 clicky  (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GATES-POWERGRIP-TIMING-BELT-KIT-K015453XS-VAUXHALL-Omega-2-5-06-94-07-00/153199494338?epid=248868953&hash=item23ab66c4c2:g:7T4AAOSwVm5Y~wZB)says for a 2.5  but gives a gates belt and  rollers (stock image on listing, not pic of correct actual item )  so a real bargain (if not sold by the time you read this)all the V6 belts are the same, but 2 types of backplate exist (but you can use your original being a non wea item)

probably cheaper brands available than gates ,I just use gates on all our cars because vauxhall did (but put them in white boxes with a GM and Vauxhall / opel part numbers on the box  ;))

I've got the locking kit you can borrow ,probably other members of OOF nearer you may have too
it's a complex belt set up ,so best not done by an inexperienced local garage ,there is an official OOF dvd on doing the cambelt   :y

you could chance the belt being ok if not many miles , how many years has it been ?

surface rust on brakes will soon go being an automatic ,unless it's deep rust/original discs etc

air con recharges have gone up in price recently . ATS often have a voucher code discount in summer ,worth looking out for

That's poor cambelt advice... "if your rollers are OK" it's the rollers that fail. And being dealer maintained, they probably only changed the belt :o

If you're not sure, change the lot.  ;)

Likewise the spark plug on number 6, as they tend to ignore that one ::)

And lose the KN filter ;)

I hope it serves you well, but don't be afraid to spend time, money and effort getting it as you want it. Regardless of the purchase price. :y

Any corners that you cut will kill the value as there are still plenty of tidy daily use Omegas around.

Not sure if anyone has said, but service life of cambelt and tensioners is four years.
Not a bad job to do with the correct tools and the OOF DVD.
Looks like a lovely example you got.  :y

I made that statement because I expect Mr 456lbft has good mechanical knowledge having owned prepped and raced LCs and appears to be in the motor trade , the car has done only 12k in 6 years , a trained mechanic/engineer  can "feel" a bearing  for condition.

If you're not sure, change the lot.  ;)

Thanks a lot for all the advice. Belt kit was invoiced in 2013 at 65,000m, now on 71,000. I have done chains and guides on Lotus Carlton, there was a dvd fit that too, but it glossed over a lot of the tricky things that we generally encounter as cars get older. I do have the facilities, but never much time. I don't like starting a job that can't be finished in the available time, because something else always crops up, and it turns into a "project", which I don't need at the moment. I am well aware of what does and doesn't go on in the trade, and I will be happy to listen to recommendations as to any trusted independants to work on it when the time comes for specialist work. I look forward to meeting you at VBOA, which is on my list of events to go to.

I used to change mine every 80k, but that was basically once every 20 months... I doubt you'll be using the car that much, so it's 2 years overdue regardless of mileage. So I would prioritize it.

The shop in the header sells the DVD. I would strongly suggest buying it from there rather than offers of a pre-owned copy if only because the shop sales help keep the forum going.

As for locking kits, the Laser ones have been known to be below par, Sealey ones are much better quality although some kits have the pulley spanner... no big deal but something to be aware of  ;)

I'd like to think the mechanics made a good job of looking after their boss's car, but you never know, and there's nothing like doing it yourself to know it's done right, even though I usually end up doing everything twice before I'm happy with it!

Car was from Hutchins Vauxhall Centre, which used to be a main dealer. There were quite a few Welsh voices heard around the cars at the auction, and I already knew the owner having supplied him 2 service kits for his Lotus Carlton the week before that was auctioned off last year.

I had a little run out in the MV6 this evening, and we're starting to bond already. My son describes it as a sleeper, and that's the way I like it. It has a powerflow stainless exhaust fitted by Welsh Coast Customs, which I was a bit worried about, but it's not too intrusive and quite a nice fit.  It's a little embarrassing not having my own company's product on my car, but I'll have to live with it for now, and it will stay until I have enough time to develop something a little better myself. We did make some very nice tubular headers years ago for one of the V6 Vectra challenge cars that ran on LPG, and the inline engine makes it much easier to fit something nice than the transverse Vectra. I remember that car had a reputation as the nicest sounding car on the grid and it was much quicker than the standard petrol cars too. ;)

Welcome to OOF!

I have a pair of cylinder heads from one of the Vectra V6 Challenge cars (apparently) was that a bit of a one off or are/were you involved regularly in Vauxhall Motorsport/888/Swindon?

Msd in MK did the vectra challenge cars,..

Chuck 4g cams in them, and put em on yours, if you have the ECU, try changing the chips over too.

We did exhausts for 6 special 3 litre Vectra road cars that MSD built, and then made tubular manifolds for one of the Challenge cars that ran on LPG that Swindon were involvedin. I'd love to build some for the Omega if I get time. It will much easier than on the transverse engined Vectra.

think it was mentioned on another thread

Beautiful Omega, seen it on the Autobhanstormers website. What was the story on the MK2 SRi 130 in the back ground in one of those photos of your car?

Same seller. It sold for about £9000, which sort of prompted me into bidding on the MV6. Sri was very nice condition with a very detailed history file from it's life as a company car, saloon too which made it more attractive and rarer than the hatchback versions imho.
