Steady 4500rpm for 15mins... Blown HG?
« on: 27 September 2010, 01:38:31 »

In a desperate attempt to drop my emissions for fast idle test a local MOT garage unofficially locked my throttle at 4500rpm for 15mins to see if CO would drop below 0.3%

Now I have white smoke from tail pipe  >:( Could this engine speed for 15mins blow my Head Gasket? The mig was already nice & warm but she is 14 yrs old  :(

Is it likely or maybe just coincidental...

Is white smoke the only symptom?

Did they make damn sure that it didn't overheat during this strange 'treatment'?

Hm :(

Along with the other questions; do you get the white smoke all the time (it's just got much colder outside, so you'll see much more than you were a week ago..) and is it overheating now at all?

pull sthe sparks out and test with a rope if its wet or not.. or try a compression test..

ps : also coolant loss will be very visible from the tank..

thanks for all the replies; white smoke is the only symptom I've noticed... Don't know if they made sure it didn't overhead? unofficial print off showed engine oil temp 112 degrees? not overheating since I've had it back... but will keep an eye! no coolant loss  :y

112! Damn.. I have to have sustained periods of high boost on the track car to get it up that high - no wonder oil change intervals are short on the Omega if that's normal :)

112 degrees will presumably be the oil temperature via a dipstick probe. In which case it's not unreasonably high.

As said, I hope they kept a close eye on the coolant temperature since if there was a problem with the cooling fans it could have overheated.

Otherwise, I would say it was on its' way out anyway. No worse than sitting at 4500 RPM on the motorway autobahn with load on it.

.. and a drive on the motorway would have done a better job of purging it, IMHO.

I hope so too  :(

afaik the fans are working fine but to be on the safe side I'm gonna test them using the method outlined by Dave AW http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1276355362/15 just not sure if I've got the correct number layout for the test socket... thanks kw  :y

Update: no more white smoke, not overheating at all (sat in very heavy traffic yesterday for over an hour, no probs), no coolant loss & no mayo in filler neck... Panic over, HG is fine  :y I'll be a bit more careful who I let play with her next time  ;)
