Octavia mk1 question
« on: 16 May 2018, 18:52:54 »

Need some help with Octavia mk1 1.9tdi
Was selling it (it is my fathers car and the guy came to see it with a friend (supposedly a mechanic)
And his friend claims the clutch is the issue.
Car runs and accelerates fine, gears operate smothly without a problem.
Clutch (whole set with flywheel was changes some 37k miles ago, single flywheel complete set from valeo was installed
Original clutch lasted for 150 thousand miles
Clutch is low but as I remeber it was always low.
The only issue is that the car makes a small clunk noise when the clutch is pressed and put into reverse.
When you put into any gear and then select reverse afterwards there is no noise at all.
Is hy trying to pull my leg or is the clutch showing signs of wear.
I don't want to cheat anybody but don't want to get cheated also.
Thanks

Car has done in total 185 000 miles
Around 150 with original clutch and 35 with new one

Tell him the clutch is fine and, if he's not happy, he's best not buying it. There will be other buyers.

original clutches last for ages(unless my mother drives the car). replacements tend not to last anything like as long.
35k miles on a replacement clutch could quite easily require another - my mother could do that in much less than half that mileage.

The other symptom suggests a potential gearbox fault.

You need to find a different buyer.

A bit of slop in the syncromesh is acceptable at that mileage ;)

Thank you all for your condolences.
He had Parkinsons so in the end was suffering and wasn't the person he used to be(rarely concious and completely immobilized).
So in a way I'm glad it doesn't hurt him anymore and hope he is at a better place.
Anyway won't bother you with my loss
Thank you again
