Title: Sticky Rev Counter
Post by: Pete4691 on 19 July 2013, 21:58:31
Hi everyone,

newbie here. I have a 2.2 Auto petrol and she runs fine however, yesterday the rev counter has started to stick/stutter it still works but it isn't smooth. The question is: is it anything to worry about or ignore it. As I say she drives well. any info gratefully recieved :y

My 3.2 does exactly the same thing 'sometimes'.  It's very sporadic, but hasn't affected anything else, so I ignore it.  :-\

Possibly  the alternator / regulator playing up

Nope, all but one Omega i've owned have had this problem at some point. it's more like the needle spindle gets stuck.

Wonder if the instrument firmware update sorts it.

I always put the latest code on the instruments but never new of any changes.

No I don't think it does, it's as if the mechanism jams then free's itself.

Never noticed this on any of mine.

Wondering if its seeing an odd rpm signal. Could it be a dodgy cam or crank sensor ?

Just happened today on mine, first time I've seen it in 15 years with a mig.  Coincided with me changing the anti-freeze, lots of water around don't know if that was connected.

Hopefully it will go away, lots of these sort of things do.  Both my migs had a sticky bulb on the left of the instrument panel, a light whack on the plastic always lights it again.

No it's the mechanism.

have exactly the same on my 2.6 v6, have changed coil packs, alternator, battery in the last few weeks and its  still sticking from 3000 up to 5000 revs and splutters at 5000. will change coil next to see if that's the problem

From what I remember, my demised vehicle had similar issues but included the speedometer also acting up. In that case the best answer that I found but never implemented was that it is the ABS module that requires repair. Also need to check the sensor which provides the rev information. In my case the sensor for rear wheel driven Catera (equivalent to Omega Saloon) it was located around the differential.

The rev information apparently was processed via the ABS module in my case. Hence the involvement of the ABS module in the symptoms.

Hope it gives some ideas.

Catera wiring is broadly similar, so it's possible  :y
