General Discussion Area / England vs Iceland

I think it was a mistake to leave out Vardy, Kane has not been impressive for me. Fluffed so many chances when given, last game he just looked tired and slow.  :-\

Time will tell  :)

I think Vardy will come on late in the game, for a better attack.

Omega General Help / Heat Shield around main cat.
« on: 09 June 2016, 19:56:34 »
The heat shield around the main cat on the 2.2 is loose, it's flapping about a fair bit.

Option A: Was thinking self tappers through the shield into the body? Anything to watch out for? Current bolt area is badly rusted, so would need to target fresh metal.

Option B: Remove heat shield completely, any side affects?

Thoughts?  :y

General Discussion Area / Genuine Merc Parts
« on: 09 June 2016, 10:59:48 »
I know a few of you here have Mercs, where do you go for new genuine parts? (other the dealer obviously!)

I'm after the bonnet 3 pointed star, the raised up 'traditional' not the newer flat one. It will be fitted to a '14 Plate E250 Saloon, I've run Mercedes Brentford and they want £51 inc Vat for one.

Thanks  :y

Omega General Help / Exhaust Woes...
« on: 03 June 2016, 13:12:08 »
On the 2.2  :(

Back box split on the pipe just after the first set of hangers, barely hanging on. I was hopeful that perhaps I could separate it from the mid-section, but quickly found nope, it's fused together.....

Ok me thinks, whole new exhaust, but the bolts off the cat look seriously bad. I just know if I start or attempt to release them they will sheer off and to me look like they will take the bracket with them too. (the section on the cat, with it's loop for the bolt)  :'( - When last fitted in 2011 the edge around the bolts was very slim, I did wonder if would last another new exhaust.

So that would leave me with nothing to secure a new exhaust too, so I guess the cat section would need to come off. But can a new bracket thing be added to the end of the old cat? I really, really don't want to go new cat route. May take a while to source a second hand replacement.  :-\ - Then I bet the flexi on that would be stuffed! (as Flexi is in good shape on mine)

Thoughts?  :-\  :(

Omega General Help / Should shocks do this?
« on: 10 April 2016, 23:32:49 »
The MacTrac shocks I fitted late last year, I've never been 100% happy with. Felt ride was too stiff, but more so recently more rattles from the shock area. Jacking everything up, could not find any play in anything. So this evening I popped off the shocks and compared them to the 50k old GM ones they replaced.

Quite a difference, first show in video is MacTrac vs GM. I can't remember the GM ones going on, if just over time they have seized around this point.  :-\

But a clear difference between the two, I've stuck my old GM ones back on to see if it cures what I've been hearing past few days.

General Car Chat / So glad I do DIY car work...
« on: 09 April 2016, 12:58:29 »
Only time I use garages is for tyres, I was given a 'booked' slot at 10:45 today. Turned up, sorry really busy, just had 2 cars come in.

But I had a booked slot, you knew I was coming? Yes sir but we did not expect to be this busy this morning.  ::)

Come back at 12:30 I'm told, which I've done. I'm sitting in the waiting room for last 30 mins. Have they touched my car? Nope!  >:(

General Car Chat / Oil on painted floor garage...
« on: 08 April 2016, 21:53:35 »
When transferring oil from 20L drum into smaller 5L bottles I managed to spill some on the garage floor.  ::)

I've mopped it up as much as I can with paper towels, it's left a slippery surface there now, what's best method for cleaning/removing it?  :-\ :-\

The floor was sealed then painted a couple of years ago now.

General Car Chat / Uh-Oh - A tyre thread!!
« on: 01 April 2016, 18:40:02 »
So my trusty steed the 2.2 is going to need new boots in the coming weeks, health check today found a screw in front tyre.  >:(

It's repaired but it was getting very low anyway, so it's bought me a little time. Current set are Khumo 31's which came on a set of CDX alloys I bought off PaulS in 2012, I've been very, very happy with these tyres for my needs. Excellent low noise, really are silent on a run, ample grip in wet and dry. Put them on at 155k miles and it's now on 188k, so can't really complain.

So what are the options for next? (225/55/R16) or could do (215/55/R16)

Local independent place who I'm trying, fixed the tyre for £20 offered some "Mohawk's" for £66 a corner fitted, but research suggests cheap Chinese crap. Their next step up were "Avon Z7's" @ £76 corner.

Blackboots at WIM suggested some shitty AutoGrips at £61 fitted, or Falken's at £86  ::)

I'm very tempted to try RobG's suggestion of these:

http://www.macctyresltd.co.uk/tyre-details.asp?id=20&Accelera

With fitting would be £74 corner.

To add into the Mix the 3.2 needs tyres soon as well, but I've got a set of almost knew KU39's from MotherT's old estate to go on the newer Elite rims on the 3.2

That would leave a spare set of older Elite alloys, which I could put on the 2.2. 17's do appear cheaper, need to do some research.

Any thoughts?

... as someone in (soon to be) MrsT family works for Aston Martin. They regularly get to borrow them as company cars, lucky git!

Anywho they very kindly offered to get a Rapide for us, to use as our wedding car  :D

So we went for a look at one locally, as pictures showed back seats looked interesting and not sure it would be practical. Nice chaps at Aston dealer let us have a good look over it, it's nice but it's not practical for a wedding car, my head rubs the roof lining and even I have problems getting in the back seats.  Shame really  :(

Also, even though I was in the 3.2, I had the distinct impression that I had the crappest car in the car park  ::)  ;D
