The mother in laws hot water is playing up. Despite the controls being set the same some days the hot water is luke warm and some days it is literally boiling hot. The room heating seems unaffected. The only thing she adjusts is the thermostat.

A plumber came out and said sounds intermittent. Can't see anything wrong with it so has left it "next time it does it ring me and I will come round pronto and see if I can see what is wrong".

The only other thing is that the hall control box sometimes has the red light on at odd times of the day.

To me it must either be the timer or the thermostat.   

Anyone got any thoughts on what might be wrong please?

Could be a sticky three port valve. Ours is only fifteen months old and I'm already having to give it a tap to get the motor going.

Some controllers have a "hot water priority or heating priority" switch/ button. If yours has it, is it working ok?

Indeed. These are flaky at best, so, if it has one, it'll be prime suspect, IMHO.

Cylinder stats are also often quite crudely constructed and often fail.

I had problems with a three port valve caused by failure of the microswitches. The boiler and pump were wired through the microswitches which weren't rated to switch an inductive load.

IIRC the switches were near identical to the ones in the Omega door lock motors.

Sounds like mid position valve issue, there should be a lever on it which allows you to lock it into the mid position as a temporary measure.

I would only advise buying Honeywell ones as they seem to be the only truly reliable ones out there.
