WIERD TEMP
« on: 03 October 2007, 15:47:44 »

Hi gang, changed rad on 2l 16v auto due to old rad being cracked.
temp when fans kicked used to be around 95 deg now they kickin at about 89 deg.

rad seems cool to touch a bit concerned as not sure what temp fans should kickin at or is it overcooling

As long as the fans don't run all the time I wouldn't worry, although it sounds cool. What temperature does it normally run at when moving?

Are you on the same fan switch in the new rad or did it come with a new switch?

So if it's running at 90 now and the fans cut in at 89 does that mean the fans run all the time?

It could be that there was some muck on the fan switch previously and this has been dislodged. I have seen this affect the temperature at which they switch before.

Could well be the fan switch. I wouldn't have thought they'd be hugely expensive. Under a tenner would be my guess but who knows what the main dealer markup is?

The way to check is to give it a good run at "main road" speeds and let the temperature stabilise, then pull over and pop the bonnet. It should take a minute or two for the temperature to get high enough to start the fan, maybe more. You should also see the gauge move up significantly from the normal running temperature.

As a guide to what to expect (mine's a V6 so will be different) mine runs at 85-90 when on the move and the fan starts at probably 95, so there is a distinct increase before the fan runs. The gauges aren't wonderfully accurate so it's the relative temperature that's important, and that the fan isn't running at normal cruising temperatures.
