I feel better already!
« on: 14 October 2015, 19:43:31 »

I've been feeling unwell/jaded/burntout for most of this year, which I suspect(hope!!!) is the last 12 years of minimum 60hour weeks plus on-call nights catching up with me.
So, yesterday I handed in my notice and find myself unemployed for the first time ever. I'm writing off the rest of October, and will be looking for work that doesn't take as much time.
What surprises me, is that my family, friends, colleagues and even my (now previous) boss have all said that it's about time I did this.

I feel better already!!!!

You're not alone.  My trips back and fourth to frogland on top of a 48 hour week (circa 60+ hours a week sine Feb last year with only 4 week off) have taken it out of me to the point where the crohn's has started to kick in again.  So I have negotiated with the client to work from the UK most of the time until the end of Nov and after that we'll see what happens.  My specialist is not very happy, he got me to a good place and now we'll have to start again.

I did the same about 3 years ago.. working 60+ hour it was realy getting to me and the family. Handed my notice in then took 3 months off. I now work 3 days a week and feel a hell of a lot better for it. :y

These decisions are never made lightly, and the only outcome is a positive one...ie "Why didn't I do this sooner?"

Good luck with the future though :y Pm incoming

Good luck with it, Nick. :y

Keep telling the wife, who is 44 and has worked irregular regular hours, sometimes up to 70 in a week, for the last ten years, that she will burn out. She says she won't and goes upstairs with her laptop.  ???

Been there, got the tee shirt :y :(
You have made a wise choice, Nick. I spent years with a company working my socks of in a management position, and doing absolutely stupid hours. Culminated in a breakdown, which, I would not wish on anyone. Anyhow, I came through it, changed lifestyles, and felt better than I had in years. Life took on a new meaning.

Its a big world out there Nick, and I am sure, you, like my son in law who, as I have told you, was sh*t on from a great height, (after doing, like you 60+ hours a week on Recovery), won't regret the decision. He is now happier, healthier, and again enjoying life, as you will too :y
People like you and him, not afraid to get your hands dirty, have a greater choice than many :)

Yup, can't fault you nick  :y

I spent over 16 years working from home with the all phone numbers in the yellow pages.
Shit 24/7  :'(
Ended up with my head totally messed up and in the end, I went bankrupt and lost the lot  :(

Never had much money since but more importantly for me and my family, no dept and next to sweet F all stress  :y :y

At the end of the day, remember this bud ...............

In my opinion you have made the right decision. If you hit the point of "burn out" it's a rapid downward spiral. (I speak from experience)Time to take a bit of time out and "me time"  take stock re evaluate and decide what to do for the future. without the constant daily pressure hopefully you can take a more clear and objective view of the direction you want to take your life. Good luck with whatever you decide to do  :y

I'm sure there's plenty of work for anyone with a very high level of experience such as you've built up. You've proven you're capable. May I wish you the very best of luck in your future endeavours  :y

Good for you.

It might feel a scary place now while you recharge your batteries but you will get sorted.
