General Discussion Area / Libre Office or Open Office?
« on: 21 February 2021, 16:49:38 »
I'm getting a new PC (well actually an ex office one off ebay) and whilst it will have Win 10 on it, it won't have MS Office.

What are people's thoughts and experiences with Libre Office and Open Office (or anything else). I don't think this machine needs a full blown MS Office licence but being able to use Word, Powerpoint or Excel occasionally would be handy.

General Car Chat / Any online resources for Corsa VXR?
« on: 15 December 2020, 08:19:57 »
I have kind of landed a project to get a friend's Corsa VXR back on the road. It has failed its MOT on a bunch of things, some minor like bulbs, some more significant like suspension, leaking shock. I think it's a 2010 model or newer.

Not having had a Vauxhall for quite few years now I don't have a TIS or links to online manuals.

A Google took me to a site that my virus checker had a major wobble about  :(

Recommendations please.

We have a Bluetooth cradle thing wired into our Mondeo. It's useful for holding the phone when charging and using a phone as a Sat Nav but the Bluetooth calling is epically bad. You have to press and hold a difficult to reach button for about 2s to answer a call and the microphone is rubbish.

It won't even pair properly with my new phone. It sort of pairs but doesn't work - brilliant. (Lizzie I feel your pain!)

What I want for this car is something that plugs in the lighter socket that will pair nicely with a couple of phones and provides decent call quality. Ideally it'll have a USB charge socket on it, not be too big and not be expensive.

There are lots of this sort of thing on the web but does anyone personally have one they recommend that costs less than say £50.

Thanks

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Dash bulbs - type and wattage?
« on: 24 September 2008, 08:31:07 »
There's a picture of one in Useful Info, there's a list of bulbs in Technical Info but the one piece of info I need is missing....

What's the dash bulb type and wattage?

I'd rather not take the dash apart to get one out to take to the motor factors....

Omega General Help / Outside temperature gone bonkers
« on: 16 December 2010, 17:08:24 »
My (facelift) 2.5V6 recently started declaring the outside temperature was 33C (when it was around 0C outside), it then started drifting around down to -40C, now it's pot luck what it reads. Today hit +12C and -37C!!!

I would have considered ignoring it but my climate control takes heed of this. So it's -5C outside but the sensor says 33C, Mr Climate Control says oh no you can't have warm air inside it's way too hot for that....

I found the sensor, actually hanging loose, behind the washer bottle behind the front bumper.

I ordered a replacement, it turned up, and I fitted it. No change - b*gger. In fact no sensor at all does exactly the same.

I'd expect no sensor to flag an error or hit a hard -40C and stay there.

So any suggestions on what's going on. Is there yet another temperature sensor somewhere (I know there's an air intake temperature sensor and at least two coolant temperature sensors)?

Omega General Help / A bundle of fault codes...but now it's OK...
« on: 23 February 2010, 21:14:04 »

2.5V6 petrol, year 2000 facelift: Driving along when the car loses power, recovers, loses power and the Engine Management Light comes on.

Stop the car, have a think. Re-start planning to drive home and all is fine.

Car drives fine for 10 miles, park it up. Cold starts fine.....

So I read the stored fault codes:

73 - Air Flow Sensor Low Voltage
89 - O2 Sensor 2 Low Voltage
13 - O2 Sensor 1 Open Circuit

Can't see any bad connections or air leaks. Car runs perfectly now.

Any suggestions? I'm a bit nervous about driving it in case it lets go again.

Omega General Help / Fault code 87
« on: 08 October 2008, 12:34:05 »
Could do with some help on this one.

The EM light is constantly on. The fault code is 87 "A/C Cutoff Relay Voltage Low".

Now I was in behind the glovebox at the weekend sorting out the towing bulb sensor. But I was careful not to disturb anything in that area and indeed I've had it all apart again and everything is fine and connected.

Fuse 28a in the under bonnet fuse box had blown. I replaced it and it hasn't blown again.

Fault still shows.

Anyone seen this before?

Still battling my code 87.

Seems I have lost power to a whole bunch of relays controlling air con and radiator cooling fans.

They should all have power from Fuse 15.

But most things on Fuse 15 are fine, apart from the stuff under the bonnet.

I desperately need:

1) The location of connector X5
2) A facelift wiring diagram - I think my Haynes wiring diagrams may be misleading me.

So far I've had virtually the entire dash out - what a nightmare....

Omega General Help / Cambelt tensioner positions
« on: 25 January 2008, 21:04:05 »
I've changed the cambelt on my car before (and yes I have a locking tool) but last time I initially set the idlers by just taking up the belt slack.

In theory, on my car (facelift 2.5), I need to set the the bottom roller to the 1 O'clock position and the top roller to the 9 O'clock position as a starting point.

Now am I barking mad or are there 6 points on the 30mm adjusters so which one is the big hand? Anyone got a picture?

Omega General Help / Manual gearbox oil?
« on: 15 December 2006, 08:38:41 »
Haynes say use the special Vx gearbox oil. Flush the 'box and don't mix different types.

Mine is a bit stiff (oo err) in this cold weather so I think an oil change might be in order.

Some people say use Dextron II or III, even though it's a manual (and that is what the current oil looks like).

Autodata says the gearbox oil is SAE 80W.

What do we think??

Omega General Help / Spongy brakes
« on: 13 September 2007, 23:46:55 »
Now this isn't technically on an Omega, it's my brothers Daewoo Espero... which is still a GM design and is really a Cavalier underneath.

Anyway we're stumped and need some expert advice / suggestions.

This has crept up on him, but now when he presses the brake it travels to the stop. There's enough braking to stop the car but not in an emergency and not enough to kick in the ABS.

We've pressure bled the system with litres of brake fluid.

We've bled the ABS unit using some handy manufacturer instructions off the internet.

We figured it must be the master cylinder so he spent £100 and we replaced it.

The problem is still there.

He's tried clamping off each wheel caliper/cylinder (drums on the back), doesn't seem to be any one corner.

Help!

Omega General Help / Lumpy idle when hot
« on: 19 May 2007, 16:52:54 »
Any ideas where to look for this one.

No oil in plug wells
New DIS pack
Well serviced: oil, air filter, fuel filter, etc.
MAF clean
No obvious air leaks
EGR can be heard opening and closing with Tech 2
No fault codes
ICV clean

Car runs very well otherwise. No missing under hard acceleration (so I'm inclined to think the HT leads are OK although they are old).

Idle isn't perfect but after a good run down the motorway i.e. engine full up to temp, idle is lumpy. Not fluctuating more than 50 rpm but just vibey at around 550rpm. Enough to shake the gear stick and to feel it through the seat.

Where should I look?

Omega General Help / Nasty noise
« on: 28 April 2007, 22:31:47 »
Pulled up at Heathrow Airport car park today (after 100 mile motorway run) and heard a nasty noise coming from my car….

The best description of the sound would be if you got two brake discs and tried to turn them round against each other like a flour mill. A sort of metallically grinding sound. Stone in brake calliper type sound.

Seems to be coming from the middle of the engine. Engine related, not speed: coasting the car no noise. Stationary and reving the engine the noise is present.

I suspect the waterpump but cannot localise the noise to the pump. The Aux belt seems to be turning smoothly. The cambelt is turning smoothly with constant tension (there’s a hole in the cambelt cover that’s been there for years that allows me to see the tensioner). Car is running fine. Temp gauge fine.

At idle only a slight noise, at 1-2k revs the wheels start grinding.

No tools, had to catch the flight.

When I come back I need to get home… Suggestions welcome…..

Risk it and drive home watching the temp gauge like a hawk?

Order a cambelt and waterpump now?

Help!

Omega General Help / Clutch problem
« on: 31 December 2006, 12:50:37 »
I think I've narrowed my gear change problem down to a clutch problem.

Engine off or at low revs (under 1500) gear change is OK, changing down through the gears is OK.

But going up through the gears especially 3rd and 4th and with a few revs (over 2500) can be really stiff. Won't go in at first then clunks in, sometimes even get a bit of gear grind.

Done the conventional clutch bleed, some crud came out, but no bubbles.

Need to try the reverse bleed, but need to get my easy bleed back off a mate first.

However if this doesn't cure it what are the symptoms of master cylinder failure, slave cylinder failure etc.....

Omega General Help / Difficult gear change (manual)
« on: 20 January 2007, 11:58:21 »
Are much research, consultation and experimentation I think I've identified the cause of my difficult gear change (2.5 V6 petrol manual).

Basically when the car is idling the gear change is fine. When the engine is cold it's not too bad either.
But once warmed up and with the revs about about a 1000 rpm it can be quite difficult to get in and out of gear. The best technique is to hold the clutch in till the revs drop then change gear - makes for some interesting progress  :-?

Changed the gearbox oil for Vauxhall's finest.
Reverse bled the clutch twice.

....Anyway I think my dual mass flywheel has gone wobbly or loose. The idle has also gone a bit vibey but the car runs perfectly (yes my ICV is clean, no oil in the plugs, no misfire, etc.).

Happened to anyone else? Anyone know of a 2.5 dual mass flywheel going spare?
