Hi - Carlton Owner curious about owning an Omega
« on: 05 March 2007, 20:16:47 »

Hi,

I've been a Carlton owner for circa 17 years now and am becoming increasingly interested in buying an Omega.
Question is - which model/year/spec should I concentrate on?

I could spend £2,000 - £3,000 but need to be conscious of running costs etc......

I need it as a daily driver and cover around 9,000 miles pa.

I've included a piccy of my current Carlton that I have owned from new in 1993, so you can see I'd be looking for something that has been well cared for.

Thanks gentlemen. :y

So what Omega should I go for   :question

I want a facelift model 2000 onwards with good levels of trim and "toys" - but which engine is the most bomb proof and reliable   :question

Excluding diesels of course  ::)

Horses for courses really, the Elite has all the toys you will ever need and the MV6 is the sportier version.

Try this http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1172877198 regarding which engine to go for

I too would probably suggest that with the mileage you intend to do, a 2.5 elite would be sufficient and I think you could get a pretty good one for your cash budget

dont be too eager to let that carlton go to just anyone if you can avoid it, it's a stunner for its age!!

Hi warm welcome to the forum, Budgie!  :y

I am a converted Carlton owner. I had a 2.6 CDXi for over 7 years and finally decided that the running costs and the keeping on top of the beast was too much for me. I now have a 2.2 CD omegas auto estate. It could do with a little more grunt but on the whole does what I want. If I was looking again I would plum for the Elite but at the end of the day your depth of pockets dictate the way to go.

I wish I had kept the Carlton but could not get any one interested so went to scrapman. Suggest you either keep the Carlton under cover as it will be a classic in the future or get some one with knowledge and kindness to look after it.

The way it looks in the pictures it certainy looks very nice, lucky man!

I do not know where you are in Lincolnshire but i have relatives down that way and there is always good Omegas around about if you look.

Hi Budgie and welcome. Nice example of the Carlton.  Don't give it away.  Imho a 2.5 Omega is the best compromise, not underpowered and not desperately thirsty.  Manual is the best option for economy.

Hi Budgie and welcome aboard :y

I personally love the V6. Mine's a 2.5 manual and returns about 25-27mpg around town and 32-35mpg on a long run.
If the engine is well serviced it's an incredibly smooth unit and has a decent amount of grunt.

Good luck in your quest :y

Hi Guys,

Many thanks to you all for the warm welcomes and sound advice.

Seems that maybe a 2.6 V6 facelift would be my well considered entry into "Omega Wold" ;)

Will probably keep the Carlton under wraps until a real owner enthusiast expresses an interest in her.

Thanks again guys  :y

Hello and welcome

As another Carlton convertee (now with a 2001 2.2 Estate) I can tell you that you won't be dissapinted with the move to an Omega whichever one you chose.  Just take your time and make sure the one you get is as nice as your Carlton and you wont go far wrong. Top spec with all the toys is how I went and now wouldn't be without my electric leather seats and cruise control etc and all this made my old Carlton CD seem a bit "thin" and I used to think that was luxurious.  As far as the engine goes I am happy with my 4 pot, plenty quiet and smooth enough with sufficient go for my needs but if you like to press on a bit then go for a 6 cyl.......just horses for courses.
Where ever your search ends you willl find these guys here really helpful. Every problem I have come across with mine has been sorted either with a plea for help or a trawl through the archives.
Let us all know what you end up with and don't give that lovely Carlon away for nothing!!

Well - it's a little over a year after starting this post and I have bitten the bullet and acquired an Omega Elite 2.5 V6 Auto. 2000 is the year of manufacture and current mileage is 68,800. It was owned by a British Airways aircraft engineer and appears to have been well looked after. The colour is champagne gold and has (of course) full leather interior.
I've had the car for three days and it is one of the most comfortable and smoothest drives I've had the pleasure of experiencing in many a year. The Carlton is a great car but the Omega has taken this to the next level.

Anyhoo just thought I'd let you know how I got on and again many thanks for your advice.
I'll post up some piccys as soon as I can.

Rgds

A warm welcome, and what a lovely example of a car that I had two examples of from new, both 2.0 CD's.  Great cars that I covered over 250k in.

After a Senator and an earlier Omega, I would certiainly highly recommend an Omega, probably a CDX or Elite 2.5/6 for insurance and running cost reasons.  Some of the guys may question this, but with these you get most of the comfort features and performance, but not the extra running costs (don't forget either the future road tax implications of post 2000 models) of the 3.0/3.2.

An excellent choice sir, congratulations on taking the mig-plunge.

I must join in and comment as an ex Carlton owner (2.6 CDX) that your Carlton is gorgeous and in my experience you'll love your Omega for years to come too.

Welcome to OOF  :y  If you want to watch the pennies you could always go for an LPG conversion ---- plenty of room in the boot for a decent tank and you get to keep the spare wheel!

Keep in mind the proposed VED hike on post 4/01 cars when choosing your steed too

I did - picked it up last Saturday from Bramhall in Cheshire - it's a 2000 Elite 2.5 V6 - a sort of champagne gold colour and I'm enjoying every single revolution of the engine so far.

BTW your Omega looks excellent!

I did - picked it up last Saturday from Bramhall in Cheshire - it's a 2000 Elite 2.5 V6 - a sort of champagne gold colour and I'm enjoying every single revolution of the engine so far.

BTW your Omega looks excellent!

thanks for the feedback! got any pics of the elite? they look really nice in champagne

Hi,

Just a bit of an update. I have advertised the Carlton now on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=300267136843

Sorry but you should not be posting a link to e-bay to sell your car, and especially as you have just come back onto the oof with only 17 posts to your account. ;) ;)

Forum Guidelines are:
Posts which are outside these guidelines are subject to modification or even deletion by the Moderators....

Avatars and Signatures
Not everyone has a 20 meg broadband connection to the forum and some use mobiles/PDA's.  Please keep avatars to below 75k to avoid annoyance to low bandwidth users.

For the same reasoning as per avatars, please keep signatures to less than 3 lines of std text. If using images, the maximum height is the equivelant of 3 lines of std text, and no wider than 640 pixels.

Posting in For Sale sections
Absolutely no links to your Ebay auctions, or Ebay auction numbers.

No posting for sale items in the 'wrong' areas to get around the postcount limits.

Currently, need to be a Junior Member (over 50 posts) to advertise your car, and an Intermediate Member (over 250 posts) to advertise parts.

If you are a buyer, please ensure you are happy and confident with the seller before parting with money.

 :) ;)
