3.0 v6 coil over plug conversion from 2.6/3.2?
« on: 07 January 2016, 20:15:25 »

is it possible to make my x30xe accept the later 2.6/3.2 dual "cop" coils?

saves a lot of mess in the engine bay and less power loss on the wires  8)

yes, covers are different indeed, but that's not a problem, 2.6 parts are easy available and cheap over here

no idea about the heads, don't think they are different and if they are will be quite easy adaptable i think

Later 3.0/2.5 heads and covers will accept the dbw coil packs...  :y

good to hear  :y

question is now if the dual coil packs can handle the signal from the ecu.
x30 is wasted spark, y26 isn't i believe?
and the wiring? anyone got a schematic?

The 2.6/3.2 heads have threaded holes for the retaining bolts for the coil packs. I think additional lugs were added to the head castings to provide somewhere for the bolt holes so you can't drill and tap your own  :-\

Also - the PFL ECU has three coil outputs, the facelift has six. You won't be able to drive the facelift coils using a PFL ECU as if you attach 2 coils to each ECU coil output the impedances will be wrong and the facelift coils will probably not have a fast enough recovery time to fire 'wasted spark'.

Engine is used widely, and post '99/'00 have a coil pack for each head, even in 3.0 guise...  ;)

Sticking with the dis pack is probably easier unless you go for stand alone engine management which has spark distribution capability :-\ depends on budget and what else you add to the engine...

that is what i'm afraid for to, the recovery time.

found a topic from someone who had tried but given up after 1 test.
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=88962.msg1141572#msg1141572

it misfired but he never tried to diagnose the problem.

are the sensors interchangeable from the x30 and y32? maybe i can run it with a 3.2 ecu
i can check the pinout (autodata) and change it if neccecary (builded a custom loom for my calibra to accept omega ecu, changin some pins is easy compared to that)

If you are prepared to go to the trouble of changing to a 3.2 ECU then I would suggest that you rob the engine loom and sensors (and immobiliser) from a donor car - it should then just be 'plug & play' .

Yep, won't work with the 3.0 ECU, so probably not worth the bother. There's not much to choose between the 2 systems. I wouldn't say one is better than the other.

to bad it ain't gonna work.. 3.2 ecu is totaly different, not a change that i get that working on the existing loom and sensors  :-\

gonna give the idea to a friend of mine, maybe he can make a electric circuit to get it to work.. small chance but he is a genius  :)

would be a nice upgrade for my calibra to get it a bit cleaner under the hood.(omega intake and ecu)
for now i'm gonna go for some custom made leads to get it as clean as possible

As others have said, this is not going to work with the existing ECU.  There is no technical gain, and the way the plug leads are clipped in the covers, its hardly unsightly.

Prefer the old type, darn sight more easier the whip the plugs out and diagnose any miss fire issues.

@theboy.. vallid point you've got there, the are not the most pretty cop units.
if i decide to make a project out of cop style ignition i'm gonna go with vag units, lot smaller and cleaner.
just need to find out what kind of signal the ecu gives and if they can handle the wasted spark, better jet, make something that bypasses the wasted spark

for nog the question is answered.. aint gonna work.. thanks to all for thinking allong  :y
