Cars for Sale & wanted / A very sad day, I'm selling my Elite
« on: 22 November 2013, 19:13:11 »
I have just bought a BMW 530d. This does not please me. However I need a better MPG than my mig will give me, so it has to go.  :'(

'51 plate, 3.2 v6 Elite in grey.

All the usual elite, including:

Cream (ish) leather
NCDC2015
Phone (demonstrated working to me when I bought it, but not used since)
Colour display (no dead pixels etc)
2008/9 satnav disc
Bose Sound System
Rear parking sensors
Never had a CDR in main or changer (during my time), no jumps or skips to discs or errors
All 4 heated seats work
Climate control is cold

102500 (in use) miles
Tax til Jan 14
MOT til
Cambelt done at 88k
Virtually no wear on any instrument buttons
All tyres inc spare (steel) good

No point in telling you how good this car is, if you're here, you know!

Bad bits:

"Soft touch" coating to door pocket flaps is wearing/dirty
Crack in front bumper (towbar i think)
Corner scuff to same
Small area of flaked lacquer to rear door
Small rust bubbles to rear arches
Small dink to rear quarter & wing (fence panel fell on it)
Scuffs to top of rear bumper (from loading)
Small tear to drivers seat (screwdriver in pocket!)
Larger tear to rear corner panel on seat back by door (don't know what else to call the edge cushion?)
Couple of minor carpark dings, nothing major
Has a tendency to "cough" occasionally, especially when less than 1/4 tank fuel, changed MAF sensor, no difference, haven't got around to looking further into it

Is in need of a damn good clean, which I shall attempt to find the time for

General Car Chat / Suggestions for a change?
« on: 25 September 2013, 21:58:39 »
I love my mig. We all do. It's why we're here.

It's comfortable, fast, very spacious, lots of toys, & handles well, it's why I'm on my fourth.

However, due to some recent ECU issues I've had the "pleasure" of an Insignia (not worthy of the Elite badge), an Astra (same inside, just shorter), and something called a Nissan "Juke" (more toys than Argos but bugger-all space or balls).

Even when driving all of the above like a 17 year old (for testing purposes, obviously ::)), they all returned 45mpg or better (diesel obviously). Now I know they were all '61 or newer, but having done some scary maths, I could save over £100 a month if I owned something diesel at even 35mpg instead of my 3.2 V6 at 24mpg :(

So, it has to go  :'(
However I tend not to spend more than £1000 on a car, if it lasts 2 years & I get £250 back then I'm happy. I obviously can't afford a new car, I'm looking to spend around £1500, but I need the following (in no order of preference):

Lots of space
Lots of toys
Less than 9 seconds to 60/62mph
Comfortable
Automatic
At least 35mpg
Preferably not an estate (but could be persuaded)

Looks like I want a Mig Elite with much better fuel economy, and no, I can't lose the space for an LPG tank.

Best I can find so far is a Volvo V70 D5 (yes, an estate & slightly more than £1500), but has anyone any other ideas?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / ECU Fail
« on: 17 September 2013, 18:23:00 »
Hi All

Contrary to popular belief that it doesn't happen, I have just had an ECU failure, this appears to be the 2nd in a short space of time, not me but Toledodude1973 http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=115237.0

Anyhoo, as a guide for anyone else, here's the comedy series of events of mine.

Car doors unlock as normal with remote after parked for approx 20 mins.
Dead on attempted starting, slight click but nowt else.
Measured battery voltage, ok
Eventually started, but with spanner light, and a complete reset including defaulting to German language & asking me if I wanted to "make an emergency call" despite having no SIM card (once I'd put it back to English & could read it!).
1/2 mile later, TC light & limp home mode, approx 10mph.
Off & on again, spanner only, full drive for about a mile, then TC & limp
And repeat about 30 times until I got home  >:( this included 2 occasions of totally dead, although no language reset.
Limped to mechanics next day, all manner of error codes.
Cleaned throttle body, slight improvement, replaced with known working body, no improvement, looks like mine was dirty anyway.
Various other things tried (I was away working), no joy.
Vx man (dealer's help guy from actual VX) plugged his computer in, couldn't work it out, suggested arcing in coil packs, duff sparkplugs or leads may be causing spikes to ECU & errors.
Replaced plugs, checked all else, no help or signs of carbonising or arcing.
Car only revs to 2.5k before TC light appears, however if revved very slowly, it would go all the way

Albitz suggested based on the above thread that the ECU may be duff, borrowed one from him complete with immobiliser ignition ring & chipped key & hey presto, good as new.

Whether there was a fault that killed the ECU, or whether it was just an ECU dying of old age  remains to be seen!

Very happy & grateful Lampy  :D

Financially better off Albitz  :y

On the side of this, as I asked elsewhere on here, bunny-hopping and stalling at less than 1/4 tank of fuel, changed MAF, no avail, will advise if this has also cured when I get low enough.....wonder if it was an advance warning?
If not, I'm still open to suggestions on that one!!

Once again, an ENORMOUS thank you to Albitz, couldn't have done it without him  :y :y :y

Hi all

I'm leaving Southend-on-Mud about 9am tomorrow (Wednesday), to land in Birmingham (Hockley) between 3 & 5pm (via Rayleigh & Basildon)

Leaving Brum between 3 & 6 (depending on arrival time), probably only there long enough for tea & cake  :y

Route will be A127, M25, M1 & M6, although this is flexible (A14, A1, M11 etc)

Any use to anyone?

Am taking a focus, and only a small load in the boot, no passengers

HTH

Omega General Help / roof rack

Probably a stupid question, but does one exist for a F/L saloon?

If so, recommendations?

Really only want it for short stepladders, and the occasional lightweight bit of trunking etc.

Omega General Help / Engine trouble
« on: 14 June 2012, 11:36:50 »
Hi All

My mig has issues. Last week or so been a bit slow to start, and last few days there's been a bit of bunny hopping. Rev jumps between 1 & 2.5k, no power (or intermittant), stalled twice. Has only happened 5 times in a few days b ut don't want it to get any worse!

Friend has a snap-on Solus reader, returns the following codes:

0172 fuel trim bank 1 malfunction
0173 fuel trim bank 2 malfunction

Any ideas?

Omega General Help / LPG Tank
« on: 12 May 2012, 00:47:03 »
Have been speaking to Toby at Independant Autogas (very friendly & discount for oofers :y), and he says the vertical toroidal (spare wheel) tank for the mig is only about 48L. Bit smaller than I was hoping for as can't afford to lose boot space by fitting a torpedo tank.

Anyone know of a bigger one that'll fit in the space?

Or alternatively, are they metal or plastic? I have an excellent engineering guy (who could make a whole mig shell given time & budget) who would be up to the metal job, custom size & shape to fit, but would assume it needs to be certified/pressure tested by someone before use?

Following on from blackviper90210's request http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=102569.0, & assuming no-one can see a security issue of any kind, is this something we could set up or use?

I, like a few members on here do some longish random journeys for work. This weekend for example, I'm going to Slough from Essex for a few hours, & back the same day, in a sprinter with only half a load.

If anyone had a part to pick up or deliver that is expensive or difficult to post (bumper, glass etc), I would be happy to make a small detour at either end to help another oofer out.

If we had a section/calendar where people could post up-coming journeys, other members could look up what people are up to without having to trawl members locations.

It would also mean (if not urgent) that I could pick up from Essex, drop to another member in Berkshire, where they could then deliver to somewhere else a week later if the Berks member was headed that way.

I know a lot of members meet on regular occasions for stuff, and feel this may be useful?

Anybody see benefits/pitfalls of this?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / lane change indicators
« on: 29 April 2012, 00:21:10 »
Driving a merc sprinter a lot atm, and really miss the 3-flash lane-change on the indicators when i get back in t'mig

Anyone tried a mod? failed? won? know 'owt about it?

Would assume that as even the basic festa has it now, that the insignia does at least, wondered if it's a whole programming/ecu thing?

General Car Chat / A quick thank-you
« on: 28 April 2012, 23:54:49 »
To Twiglet for donating a bit from my old car to fix my new one

(although he did forget my tag holder..... ::))

And to Albs for the courier services, & coffee.

(although meeting him at 4am, in the un-lit middle of nowhere was a tad concerning, especially after he'd locked the gates...... ???)

Nice one guys, many thanks  :y :y :y

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / horn
« on: 05 April 2012, 12:22:02 »
My left horn button doesn't work
 >:(

Assume they're wired in parallel, then the switch is faulty?

Before I pull the wheel to bits, anyone had this?

Thanks in advance
