Omega General Help / Re: Is there an online Vx spares catalogue?
« on: 03 October 2020, 14:43:03 »
My thanks to LCO112G, reply#4, his suggestion that https://vauxhall.7zap.com/en/car/ is such an online parts list system seems good. However, trying to find the parts I currently seek for my Vectra-C heater makes it clear to me that I need help to find the part numbers, and the option of returning incorrect parts. I recall the speed Peter Kuzemka found the pipes to the heater showing the top hat washers on his screen, apparently only available with the pipes.

Just how many parts do you actually need to buy from Vauxhall? In the 8 years I owned my Omega it got four: crank sensor, radiator top hose, oil filter adapter and some trim clips. In every case, the counterman turned his screen around so I could show him exactly what I wanted. Over all the years, and 1/4 million miles I owned Capris, I only ever bought two genuine Ford parts: rear anti-rollbar bushes and a front panel.
Not so many, but running 6 Vauxhalls, all over 12 years old, little things, like you describe, are needed occasionally. My local dealer stores manager would turn his parts screen so that I could see it, we would find the part I needed, and he would get it for me. But he has just closed down, and the my nearest Vx dealer is now 10 miles away. I should like to find the part number, then ring a main dealer with it to order the part.

My local Vx dealer having closed, I now need a new way of buying Vx spare parts. When I last sought a spare part, my local dealer brought to his PC screen a parts list. Is that parts list open to all, including me? i

General Car Chat / Downside Motors closed
« on: 01 October 2020, 11:20:43 »
Downside Motors, Chilcompton, Somerset, has for years been my local Vauxhall dealership. Since 1977 they have run a Vauxhall garage, selling new and used Vauxhalls, servicing them and selling spares. The service manager Peter Kuzemka has been helpful to me with advice and Tech II readings.

SWMBO and I spend our evenings watching TV while playing with our PCs. Yesterday at 2230 SWMBO sprang up and announced that Downside Motors was closing, news having come via internet from a chum in Chilcompton. This morning I drove the 3 miles there and checked, met Peter, he confirmed it, blaming the pandemic and consequent fall in custom.

Bother.

What can we tell you that we haven't already? It's a tight fit, that needs some effort to get in place. It's a damn sight easier than getting the oil cooler lines on a Yak 18 back through the wing roots and under the floor. Which took me all afternoon, and I couldn't feel my fingers when I'd finished.
Thanks, Nick. It doesn't help that Vx don't sell the washers separate from the matrix. I have assembled it a couple of times, only to find coolant leaks later. I expected to find hoses stuffed on pipes and sealed with jubilee clips.

I bought that used matrix, Doc, just for the washers. It should have arrived last Wednesday  but has not arrived yet. Meanwhile the Vectra, MOT expiring on October 14th, sits dead in my garage, dry of coolant. Fitting the matrix must be straightforward, a job done on the assembly line, but I cannot do it. Sounds like DG and Nick have done it, is there a trick? Haynes is no help. Please advise.

My sympathy, Bigron. With that history of earlier passes with no advisories, you must be in shock. I don't like the sound of general underfloor corrosion, either. I wish you luck finding a rust free cheap Omega on e-bay these days, too.

look on the thermostat housing you replaced Terry   ;)
or was that the other Vectra  :-\
Looked there Dave. There is a similar sensor present at the rear of the thermostat assembly., though with a larger connector. It sists in a plastic pocket, so its absence would not cause a coolant leak.

This is the same car on which I changed the thermostat, and the radiator, in the last 12 months.

Thank you gentlemen. I am surprised at the method of sealing used; the pic in reply #3 shows the pipes in the matrix, and the clips in reply#33 close around them with a washer between them. I received new washers and clips with my new matrix, cost me £32. The Vx kit costs £250; I suspect it is no simpler to install.
I shall persevere.
At least you now know why it was only £32...

Try this...

Thanks Doc. Looks worth buying just for the washers.

Having consulted a man in the know, he advises:

The seals are a top hat type affair, lubricate the metal tubes and insides (only) of the seals with silicon lube and place the seals into the opening on the matrix, then insert the tube carefully into the matrix (where the seals are seated).

Apparently, if you fit the seals to the tube first, then the top hat section does not go fully home into the matrix and the clip wont go on.

Lost of lube on the metal tube is key
Thanks for that tip from a man who knows. It makes sense. In reply #20, 13 days ago, I tried gluing the washers into the matrix, trouble then was getting the pipes into the washers. Trouble today has been the washers falling out of the matrix as I insert the matrix, or as I insert the pipes into the washers. Trouble now is the washers are stretched and deformed, so misbehave.

No markings. No water leak. I did change the radiator some months back, but do not recall removing it at the time. The connector has two pins. There is no lonely cable in the same area.

2008 Vectra 1.8 petrol manual
Having lost the heater matrix hose clip I looked high and low for it and spotted this item, sitting on a ledge behind the block, near the left hand end. Looks like a temperature sensor; no message warned me of its absence. It is part of this Vectra 1.8 that has come adrift, or some other car?

Removing washers from Astra looks like  big job. I tried some Blue RTV silicone gasket maker last night, but that failed to seal. I also have some Loctite SI5980 black silicone I could try, and some Loctite SI5990 copper silicone. though neither seems ideal for this job. Please advise.
At least I have got it part again.

I am struggling to seal the pipes to the heater matrix. The upper pipe has sealed twice on assembly, but the lower joint - should have been easier -has failed twice. I cannot get genuine Vx washers without buying a Vx kit, for £250. I am tempted to use a silicone sealant, but am worried if it still leaked I would struggle to dismantle it again. Please advise.
