General Car Chat / Re: Astra - coolant level sensor.
« on: 22 September 2020, 09:48:04 »
I was going to buy an expansion tank for the Astra from Euro Car Parts. They had the Febi Bilstein sensor (which I bought yesterday) but not the tank and it is not in their list. So looked around but there are reports of Febi Bilstein fakes on the market. Any safe recommendations as to where to get from please?

Changed sensor but problem remains. Not sure about float in expansion tank - seems to be ok. If it was float then you would expect warning  light to come on immediately but it takes 7 or so minutes of driving at reasonable speed. Could be circuit issue.
Is the tank cracked allowing coolant to short the sensor once warmed up :-\

Not losing anything at all.

Yes - i understand they were nice areas back then but to be fair I do not have any idea about the current state of things there apart from the unfortunate Toxteth stuff.

Thanks all - I have taken the old sensor out and will try a new one when it arrives in stock on Monday. Got it out without battery removal as would have to unbolt other electric stuff. Found it easier to take the sensor out first before unclipping lead.

need to replace faulty level sensor. Official method seems to remove battery and other bits but I have seen someone do it by just removing clip, jiggling around to create a bit of space and managing to disconnect lead and  unscrew level sensor and replace. Anyone done this job?

thanks Lizzie - it would not be cost effective to take this too far - just trying to work out their angle.

General Discussion Area / Help - it appears I have married a scouser
« on: 15 September 2020, 15:06:49 »
Just done a genealogy search for part of my wife's family and it is riddled with Sefton Park, Toxteth Park, Aigburth, Smithdown Road, Willow Bank Tavern, Birkenhead and more. Does this invalidate my marriage licence on grounds of misrepresentation - are there any grants available to deal with the misfortune?

Just helping my sister in law who is being made redundant this week from a dental practice after 26 years. Practice will not do the extended furlough and so we are at the end of the road with her current contract. The figures have now been put in writing which look fine other than holiday pay.

One thing I am not clear on is the employer wanting to make her take an enforced day's holiday which is trivial in the scheme of things particularly as she has not been brought back to work. In my view they have not given proper notice for this day holiday which was sent to her yesterday (although dated a few days previously) to be effective yesterday day and I think is in contravention of the Working Time Regulations 1998 on which so far they have failed to answer. Whilst it is minor i keep thinking I have missed a trick here but just cannot understand the pettiness. They offered her a new contract for one half day per week - which she turned down!!! If they have not made everyone else take a day off then is this discriminatory - employer has not answered this point either as yet?

I was at Heathrow checked in waiting to go to New York and then onto Bermuda. We watched the whole thing unfold on tvs at Heathrow. Bizarre time as I had just returned from Nigeria 2 days before and Air France had lost my luggage so I was a little delayed. Took us 3 hours to get our luggage retrieved from the New York flight. We went home and rebooked for Italy. We travelled again on Sept 11 2002 and plane to Strasbourg was empty.

Sadly after nearly 20 years and 4 different omegas, its looking like i'll be moving on next year  :'(
Cant justify 16mpg on a 2 mile journey to work then back anymore and LPG is getting hard to get off the beaten track  :(
Looking at the Audi A6 avant / Allroad or maybe depending on fuel consumption, a VW Touareg ?
V6 Turbo Diesel
Looking at a one registered before April 07 so I don't get my arse abused with the road fund tax  :-\

Needs to have some grunt, and tow a pikey van in the summer.

Anybody on here owned one ?

If you are not going to do repair work on the car yourself then an ageing Touareg V6 could become a liability. They share a lot of parts with the phaeton and presumably the Bentley logo on there somewhere. Ran my Phaeton for 10 years and it was heading into pain in the ass territory when I got rid with various sensors acting up, power steering pipes corroding and other stuff which I was surprised at. I think Henry D does his own repairs but having seen the VW alleged quality to be a bit of a myth I would tread carefully. The brake discs were highly prone to corrosion if left standing for any length of time and had warranty battles on this in first couple of years even which persisted out of warranty. These cars need to be regularly driven a decent distance from my experience.

General Discussion Area / Re: Multimeter - continuity testing
« on: 10 September 2020, 22:24:07 »
When I referred to 1 that is when multimeter is turned on without connecting to anything. So the 1 correctly shows open circuit. When I connect up it shows a reading other than 1 with a confirmatory beep that all is well. I suspect Dave's point on internal workings is probably the relevant area. As said there is a thermal cut out on the pump and an isolator feature on the transformer. Thanks for all the input.

Yes - low cost - was more interested in understanding the continuity capability of my multimeter. Cannot seem to find a similar situation on the web.

No mains is not tripping- it is a very low voltage  water feature pump - 11va. When I set meter to continuity it reads 1 in left corner which is supposed to be fine. When testing circuit I get beep which is also supposed to be ok.i have now fitted new pump and transformer and all is fine. I should have tested new pump with old transformer before I installed and put the heavy concrete bits back in place
