Maintenance Guides / Fix electric mirror switch on Pre-Facelift
« on: 24 December 2010, 22:15:54 »
This guide aims to show you how to repair your electric mirror adjuster switch. The symptoms to which this guide relates is inability to adjust either of the external mirrors to the left, right or downwards. Upwards adjustment is possible until the mirror reaches it's upward limit.

There are three pieces of trim to be removed before we can access the screws we wish to undo.

The trim pieces are arrowed below:

I found the easiest way to remove the first piece is to use the point of a utility knife blade and flick gently. This causes no damage to the trim.
Note the orientation of this piece of trim, there is a slot in the top and it only fits one way.

Piece no.2 simply prises off using a thin flat blade screwdriver, nothing complicated here.

Piece no.3 is even easier, just pull the trim away from the handle near the top.

We can now undo the three phillips screws that have been revealed, and remove the handle section of the door panel. The top left corner may need a little tug but should come away quite easily. Don't pull too hard as there are wires behind this which have to be disconnected.

Once the door handle section is off you will see this connector, disconnect this.

Now we have to remove the adjuster switch. There is a sprung clip on either side of the switch which can be depressed with a screwdriver. Once one side is free the other side comes out with no effort.

Withdraw the adjuster switch and place it on a flat surface to work on. Not on top of the engine like I did.
I dropped a connector cap down between the radiator and the grill and spent more time trying to find that, than it took to do the whole job.

Now remove the spring clips from both sides of the switch.

There is a small bridging piece of plastic separating the wires, this will just push out with a small screwdriver.
Now the fiddly part. Work around the four retaining lugs using two small flat blade screwdrivers to separate the two sections of the switch. This is the most difficult part of the operation.
Push one screwdriver down the inside of the switch while pushing on the lug, from the outside, with the other.

Once the switch is open, inspect for damage.

Verdigris on the contacts, one of the contact caps still in place.
Remove the contact caps and clean all the verdigris off using switch cleaner. I used an ammonia based window cleaner spray a cloth and small screwdriver to get in all the corners.

Spring loaded pin siezed.

Pull control button off to release the pin holder.
A spot of 3 in 1 oil on the siezed pin and a bit of working in and out with a pair of pliers soon freed this off.

Two of the three contact caps which sit on top of the pins, or under them, depending on your view.
Give the caps a good clean with your switch cleaner especially the outside surfaces.
Beware they are very easy to drop because of thier shape.

Contacts cleaned up and smeared with vaseline.

Trying to reassemble the switch with the caps on top of the pins resulted in the caps falling off everytime, so flip the switch over and put the caps into thier cradles in the other half of the switch.

Vaselined and ready to go back together the proper way with caps back in thier place.

Ensure that the telltale lamp locates in it's place properly and that all four retaining lugs snap back in to place.

Put everything back in reverse order and enjoy playing with your mirrors and if this didn't work for you. just replace the switch.   ;)

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Electric mirrors

PFL/Saloon
The mirrors will only tilt upwards when I press the button. Pressing down, left and right does nothing, I don't hear the motor working either.
This fault is identical on both mirrors.
The tiny light beside the selector switch does not light up.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / CDR2005 Dead
« on: 14 October 2010, 23:42:53 »
CDR2005 in V6 was working fine, then, only a buzzing interference which increased and decreased in time with the engine revs, then, dead as a dodo.
Thinking fuse no.6, discovered no fuse in no.6 holder. Put 20amp fuse in, no result.
Now hoping for confirmation that there is another fuse in the unit itself, if so what size before I pull the unit out.

Omega General Help / Quick sunroof query
« on: 27 December 2010, 16:11:31 »

Looks like my sunroof cables have siezed. Electrics and motor work fine.
My question is should I be able to open it manually and if yes should I be turning the screwdriver clockwise or anti-clockwise. Don't want to force it in the wrong direction.

Omega General Help / code 59
« on: 02 December 2010, 22:32:19 »
59   Intake Manifold Valve 1 Voltage Low

This is only error code I have still to clear on the v6, after a bit of searching I came across some posts referring to this problem but could find none that reported a successful conclusion.

The solenoid plug is plugged in.

Am I looking at removing the manifold valve and cleaning or is it more likely a problem with the solenoid valve?

Omega General Help / wheel bolt cover plate
« on: 16 September 2010, 21:56:56 »

I knocked off the head of the securing bolt with a chisel.
Couldn't undo the threaded part from the wheel.
Tried to drill into it to use a screw extractor and broke the drill bit.
Can't grip with pliers or molegrips.

Any suggestions

Omega General Help / Back to the EGR
« on: 04 September 2010, 21:31:51 »
I noticed from the recent posts concerning the blanking of the EGR Valve that there are those who advocate a blanking plate which would prohibit any air (or gases) from entering the intake manifold, as far as I can see on my TD, and others who use a blanking plug (coin or such) at the exhaust gas inlet, thus prohibiting only exhaust gases getting through.

Any thoughts on what is best.

Omega General Help / No Cambelt on my car
« on: 29 August 2010, 01:50:11 »

I've got a timing chain.   ::)   Are there guidelines on when and if these should be checked, changed, retensioned or whatever.
Not that I have a problem but forewarned is forearmed.

Loved your guide on chipping the ecu on the TD, looks fairly straightforward.  Have you any idea where these upgrade chips can be bought ? I scoured the web but can only find companies that want to do it for me or remap my chip.

Omega General Help / Fault codes 17,44,49
« on: 24 August 2010, 23:42:50 »
I had poor reaction from the gas pedal especially going uphill, decided to check for blockage in pipe from egr to underside of manifold. No blockage but the pipe was split just below the nipple under the manifold.
Cut off bad section and reconnected, this gave an immediate and very noticeable increase in response.
Did paperclip test and got the following:

17      Fuel Temperature Voltage High
44      Incorrect Boost Pressure
49      Glow Device General Error

The car is running very well and starting without any problems. Only concern is that the temp gauge rarely goes above 50 degrees. I plan to change the thermostat (when I figure out how) I suspect it's stuck open.

I assume 44 is a result of the split pipe and will eventually clear itself.
I assume 49 is one or more dodgy glow plugs, although the car starts first time now I did have a bit more difficulty starting over the winter. As for 17 I don't have a clue.

Any suggestions  or advice would be greatly appreciated.
