So, they ring your conventional doorbell, no-one answers and they assume you are in, so they don't break in and steal your possessions?

Well, that too! It's no different to a regular doorbell, really, in terms of "risk" (IMHO)
Personally if I'm expecting a package and I've had to go out, I'll talk to them and ask them to leave it somewhere/neighbour/etc depending on who I know is around (to be fair, most of the delivery guys who come here come often enough
that they know where to leave stuff and which neighbour to go call on.. even the Amazon Logistics guys are great) - but if I'm not expecting a package then I'll have a squiz at who is at the door, but I'm unlikely to talk to them.
Usually charity muggers, anyway, around here.
If they do get in then the dog will eat them and the cats will clear up whatever is left, so problem solved
