what a tool !

bought a plasma cutter the other week - what a great piece of kit that is. It'll cut 12mm steel and do it in such a cool manner that you can use paper templates without burning them.

I cut two holes in the parcel shelf of my MV6 last night for the BOSE speakers - didn't even need to cover the carpet or the seats up. Just zapped around a paint tin lid

I even managed to cut a the top off a coke can without spilling any - and was still able to drink it afterwards.

It'd be a damn site easier to remove the autobox sump with such a tool.  Refitting may take some planning.....

A friend of mine bought one off ebay (here's a warning to you all to avoid suspiciously cheap tools ;)) - all 'CE' marked and so on..

Reading the manual, I commented that it's rated draw was considerably above 13A (at least 16A, more like 21A though), yet it's fitted with a 13A plug & flex..

On opening the plug we found a 19A fuse (I didn't even know they made those) with a bar soldered across it - essentially, a bolt in place of a fuse  :o

'CE marked' my left bottom cheek.

fire up the plasma cutter and cut round it on the car to remove the rusted out piece, then weld the new bit in exactly!!!
saves hours of slog!!! :y

Exactly what I want one for....although for use on heritage vehicles withour rubber wheels !

You get a much better weld if you grind the plasma cut edges back slightly, which means that technique doesn't save much. Although I did the front N/S side floorpan, jacking point and inner sill on a mate's |Triumph 2000 that way, having cut the whole lot out of another car. Just needed some carefull trimming and the entire lot went in one piece.

They're great for doing sills; two straight cuts along the top and bottom, drill out the spot welds with plenty of room, and fit the new one. Quick, easy, and quieter than any other method.

They're not good for multiple layers of steel though, you get a very poor, interrupted cut.

It's well worth ensuring that your air supply is dry and filtered; you get a better cut and the tips last much longer.

I used to use Plasma Cutters everyday repairing lorry trailers etc& your right what a tool. When you get used to it you wont need to dress the edges with a file or grinder.... :y
