Omega General Help / Cam covers
« on: 14 May 2012, 14:23:39 »
I've an oil leak somewhere on my car. It's dripping off the front of the gearbox & making a nice slick on my drive. So suspecting the usuall culprit of cam covers I've had a look. Driver's side all bone dry, however there's a little oil around the front of the cover.
I replaced all seals on both cam covers last summer - OE from Andy C.  The easy side still has 3 dry plugs  :y  :y The slightly testing passenger side has 1 dry plug, 1 slightly damp & the No2 plug is just starting to paddle in oil.  :'( I've just removed the cover for a look-see. The gasket is still pliable & no signs of it having been trapped or twisted etc in its groove. Has anyone put a straight edge across their cam covers when they were off?
I'm starting to think the impossible ........ warped cover  :o :o

Omega General Help / 2.2 fault code
« on: 14 May 2012, 12:08:24 »
Just put my Maxiscan code reader on a forum member's 2.2 Omega ..... occasional EML. It came up with P1781 which isn't on the list with the paper clip test, but the reader shows "CAN data bus, ECM actual torque signal - malfunction detected"   ??? ??? ??? ???
What's that mean in English?  :-\ :-\

Anyone ever have the above fault code come up? The EMl flickered for a few seconds, went off completely, came back on again a few times over a few miles, car seemed to drive OK. EML back off now.  :-\

General Car Chat / Road side checks for MOT & ins
« on: 09 May 2012, 21:06:40 »
I thought that they were done via VOSA vehicles  :-\ :-\
On my way home from work earlier this afternoon I saw a Sprinter type van coned off on the opposite side of the road in a bus lane being 'attended to' by 3 or 4 Bobbies (couple of which wore a classic Bobbies helmets  ???) Didn't think anything of it. About 100yds further round the bend was a copper in a marked Police Nissan 4x4 wanna-be with what I can only assume was a camera attached to the B post pointing behind him.
Was he checking MOTs & insurance?  :-\ :-\ :-\ I've only ever seen VOSA marked cars with a board of some sort saying something along the lines of ''we're checking that you're road legal'

My daughter's 'new' car was dropped off this afternoon, so she was following up some quotes that she'd done via Autotrader a week or so back. One was from Admiral for £954 if paid for in one go, so she asked how much to spread it out over the year. £120 a month over 12 payments!!  :o :o :o :o That's about 66% interest! I know that Admiral are an insurance provider & not a bank, but I think that's unbelievable!  >:(

I got a phone call first thing this morning from the car sales place I placed my deposit at. Bad news he said, we had a break-in last night, they cropped the padlock on the main gate & the only car they nicked was yours!! (The garage is in Maghul - Liverpool  ::) ::) ::)??? ??? ??? He was very apologetic & said all the right things, but the more I think about it ............ the more I'm not sure  :-\ :-\ :-\ I can't give a reason why he might be spinning a yarn, but if you were nicking a car, would you nick a 56 plate R Class?
So the search begins again .............  :( :( :(

General Car Chat / Vauxhall Coursers
« on: 25 March 2012, 15:54:47 »
Having a look around at cars suitable for No 1 daughter. Having been given an extended contract in her job, she's decided that a couple of hours each way commute on the bus isn't for her & has decided that Dad should help her find a suitable car .........  ??? Naturally, I've been looking at Coursers for her.  ;D ;D ;D
Choices between 3 pot, chain driven cam 1.0 or 4 pot, belt driven cam 1.2
Anyone with any opinions or experiences of either? I can't see a couple of hundred cc's making too much difference to running costs or insurance .................. (not that I've looked at insurance yet  :-X)

I seem to remember that there are some recovery drivers on the forum.

SWMBO's Smart decided to play funny buggers today (best guess says it's crank shaft sensor  :-\) so I called Green Flag to bring me back home.
Talking, as you do to the driver, he works four days on & four days off and he tries to get as much overtime as he can get. As I found out he needed it .......... hourly rate of £7.50 but overtime after 6pm gained him a huge 50 pence/hour! ??? ??? The poor lad had even forked £3000 out of his own pocket to take his HGV II & HGV I, he was just coming to the end of a loan to pay for it. Tachographs are apparently not needed if you're within 60 miles of home depot but were worked around by saying they were working from one the bases closest to where they were. I did ask him if he was looking for another job, but it seemed as though he was just glad of the job he had.
The recovery firm works in the north west (of England) and their name sounds like they laid a kind of bitumen road surface.  ::) ::)

General Car Chat / deranged or deluded eBayer?

Why do some sellers quote the price their car was new? The fact it was £26k new, or had £2800 of 'extras' fitted at the time has no relevance now.
Oh well! Good luck on their sale!  ::) ::) ::) ::)
