Did I fancy a drive in A Mustang?[a 65plate 5L]  Of course after a great deal of thought I let the guy [an acquaintance]force the remote fob into my hand First thing that struck me was the fob was just like the one you get with the new Mondeo-although there's nothing wrong with that just that I suppose I expected something a bit special in some way-one thing that amused me once sat in it was the speedo,round the outer edge there is the speed markings in mph and further into centre the ones in kph and between the two it says ground speed .As obviously it's not my car I don't know the 0-60 time,nor do I know the ultimate top speed[never got near it or even try to]It wouldn't really matter as from start up to shut down there was just that sound and oh what a sound I could keep one of these cars just on that basis alone,nearly cried when I had to return the fob after an hours run about

Since the 1968 Mustang Fastback I have always fancied them.

The latest ones are just so great to look at, and no doubt fun to drive.  Last year I saw a brand new 5L red example in my Sainsbury's car park; my God, did it look cool!!

Regarding the key fob, I'm afraid when it comes to things like that Ford just don't seem to "get it". Iirc they even put some ford bits onto the early Aston Martin Vantage and DB9 (keys and some switchgear iirc)when they had control of the company

And that's why ( I strongly suspect) we'll have lots of flimsy Peugeot switchgear to look forward to on the next generation of Vauxhalls....

Had one in the states in 2013 drove from San Francisco to Los Angeles (Pacific coast highway) red convertible & loved every second in it lovely sounding V8,  they certainly are a beautiful car.

in America there is a much bigger difference in the price of a V8 and 2.3 Mustang. And apart from a few specials, Mustangs have always been priced at the cheap end of the coupe market, which has always meant that smaller engines have been both common and popular. The original 289 V8 was barely anymore powerful than the straight six that was standard fit, together with weak suspension and hopeless brakes.


I don't like the looks of the latest Mustangs; they're badly proportioned, have too many contrived styling features and like the previous model are too big.

Big and bloated though it was I quite liked the look of the Mach1.The ugliest Mustang for me was the MkII[I think that's how it was termed] from the late '60's/early '70's[?]The one I drove was in darkish Grey metallic as can be had on "British" Fords which I thought quite suited it.

Really? Evo don't agree that the Ecoboost accelerates faster:

The Mustang GT is the UK's best performer, dispatching the 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds depsite a lardy 1771kg kerb weight, while the Ecoboost requireds another second to hit 62mph

Unless you mean in-gear times (say 30-80), which I can't find figures for as easily.

Evo say the V8 is the only one to get, Jalopnik (IIRC) say the 4-pot is "more than enough for most people".. but y'know, when is enough, enough? When it comes to power or cylinders, never!

100% agree. The ecoboost would be a fine engine for a big comfy mondeo ST. For a 'stang, definitely not.

If I wanted a new 'budget' yank convertible, then it would be the Camaro... the 280ish bhp 3.6 is a decent enough engine. Obviously the 6.2 V8 would be the first choice, but as compromises go, the 3.6 is an acceptable one

Fixed, looking at the gearbox might go in an Audi as they like the whole arse backwards approach to engine installation. Might not improve the understeer though

Oh, and to answer Aarons question, 12 should suffice
