wiring help
« on: 06 June 2014, 11:33:56 »

I recently bought a cigarette plug for my travel fridge  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=151234620911 Just opened it up to wire it, expecting to find screw terminals to fit the wires .... but no such luck.

Am I soldering my fridge wires to where the resistor & diode are already soldered so the diode & resistor are across the feed to the fridge?  :-\

Yep. :y

I assume you've got the pin from the end? ;)

First thing is if its not fused, chuck it in the Bin, but I assume the fuse goes in th the center part and is not shown in the picture.

So, +12V (Pos) gets soldered to the centre pin, left of the LED and Ov (Neg) gets soldered to the Upper outer pin left of the resistor,

The Resistor (current limiter for the Diode) and Diode just indicate that the plug is live when pluged and will not have amy effect with the 12V feed to the Fidge.

Just to add, I would expect some sort of clamp at the end, to stop stress on the wires / plug, should it get pulled out by the feeder wire, some cheap ones just tie a knot  in the wires before the rubber grommet, but you would need to sort something there, if no restrainer fitted.

Thanks to you both ......

Yes, there's a fuse that lives in the middle bit and the +ve bit that's sprung against the fuse is screwed into the thread showing.

This is it in all its glory. No clamp for the cable, I'll see if I can get a small cable tie in there.  :y

Has anyone a suggestion for a decent 12 volt cigar plug, suitable for a 6 amp camping fridge - this was supposed to be rated at 10A ...... the one above had melted itself by the time we'd got to France ..... no idea at what point. I didn't see the point in accepting another from the supplier. And I emailed Tristar - the fridge maker - and they were as much help as a chocolate fire guard  ???

This post proved useful as I think he wanted to question how I'd wired it up, but I just pasted him the link  ;D ;D

THey do get hot, surprised the one you had melted though, Ive used that type before, always found them to be good, a nice tight fit into the socket, maybe its a crap chinese copy, lake of cable clamp was probably a clue  :-\.

Does it need to be wired to a ciggy plug?, Ive used UPS's and stuff in the back of the Estate and have Hard Wired them in via an Anderson Connector and fuse a lot neater job and higher current rated  :y

 ....

It wasn't a moulten blob ...... but it'd had meld inside enough that it put up a fight when I opened it.

As long as it's powered up I suppose it could be connected with anything ........ that looks like a mini version of a fork truck battery connctor. I might look into that because there is a good 12 volt connection in the boot for the rear SAM  :y  :y

Have a poke through the RS catalogue in the sparkys shack at work Andy, bound to be some connectors that fit the bill.

You must be joking ....... the best I'd find at work is a roll of insulation tape for use after I'd twisted the wires together  ::)  ;D  ;D
