Omega General Help / power steering failure!
« on: 24 April 2008, 19:49:18 »
hi folks, i changed the oil in the car yesterday and everything went great.
i took it for a drive to warm the oil up first and every thing was as normal, i even tried the air con for the first time to find that it actually blows quite cold :)

Anyway after changing the oil i ran the engine for a bit and again no probs. come to go shopping today to find no power steering, the climate control isn't working either and all the buttons underneath(heated seats, tc, etc..) aren't illuminated but everything works when you press it. I found that out when the missus got quite warm on the way back and realised her heated seat was on.

I checked the fuses and found a blown 30, replaced it but still no change.

Do you reckon the climate and the pas failing at the same time are related?

Any ideas?

cheers
Dave

Omega General Help / battery help.
« on: 16 March 2008, 20:34:10 »
Hi folks, my battery decided to give up the ghost and i,ve had to jump start it the last 2 days by hijacking the next car driving past my garage ;D

What i want to know is..

a: do i need a heavy duty one or will a normal car battery be ok?

b: how much would i be looking at for a new one(cheap as poss cos i'm a bit skint atm)

I've already pestered Timbuk to see if he's got one lying about but it doesn't look like he has.
We're going down portsmouth next friday and i don't fancy jump starting it every time i need to drive it :D

Omega General Help / buypartsby/ cambelt kit
« on: 09 February 2008, 00:25:55 »
found this...

https://sslrelay.com/buypartsby.co.uk/timing-belt-kit-info.php?recordID=6714

is this the right belt kit for my engine? my engine number is 08283533.

it seems a bit cheap compared to the prices i've seen elsewhere, even with the vat it's still only just over £60.

has anyone ever used this company?

any input is appreciated ;)

Omega General Help / tools for cam cover gaskets.
« on: 29 December 2007, 17:55:21 »
right i've finally plucked up the courage to do the cam cover gaskets, breathers and droplinks aswell.

i've got..

the four gaskets
16 o rings
black sealant
carb cleaner
wd40

what i need to know is, are there any specific size sockets/spanners or special tools that i might need?

i'll be doing it at home(mainly cos i can get some advice off here if i get stuck ;D) but need to drive to my dads 5 miles away to pick up the tools i need.

i've also just brought a torque wrench off ebay but it's not in nm, i think 8nm is just under 6ft lbs, does this sound about right?

i know this has been covered loads on here before but i just want to make sure i've got everything before i start.

any advice is muchly appreciated ;D

Omega General Help / rocker gasket quote
« on: 28 November 2007, 16:44:26 »
i've just rang a local garage for a quote to do my rocker gaskets and the guy i spoke to reckons it's a 4 1/2 hour job.
i told him i've already brought the gaskets,o-rings and some black sealant from the dealers, he said it would cost £185  to fit :o aswell as cleaning the breathers out.

he also said that i'd need to buy new rocker covers aswell as they warp and it'll just start leaking again if the old ones go back on.

it only leaks from the back end on the left side(not a lot) so i don't think they are warped.
does this price sound about right? or is the guy full of it just to screw more money out of me :(

i'd do it myself but never done a v6 before.

oh and do i need a torque wrench to tighten the bolts and what's the setting for the cam cover bolts?

thanks

Dave

Omega General Help / knocking suspension
« on: 25 November 2007, 21:38:30 »
hi folks, i have a rather worrying knocking noise from the drivers side suspension, you can feel it through the floor. sounds like somethings loose.

the car's had new wishbones recently fitted by timbuk of here so i don't think it,s them. i had the tracking done last week at kwik fit (which was 21mm out) and they checked the wishbones aswell, all ok.

the noise has got worse today after a drive to stoke and back and after a quick search on here it looks like it might be one of the droplinks.  i've had a quick look at them and they aren't snapped but they are pretty rusty.

there's no pulling to left or right infact it drives a lot better since the tracking was done.

i had a similar problem on my astra and it was a snapped link, do the joints just go in them or do they tend to snap?

any help is appreciated

cheers
Dave.

Omega General Help / vec cam covers
« on: 23 November 2007, 00:05:15 »
hi folks, i'm gonna go get a pair of rocker gaskets tommorrow and wondered if it's worth picking up a pair of second hand alloy covers to replace the plastic ones that mine apparentley has.

i've heard that they're a lot better as they don't warp.

anybody else got them on their engines?
