You need to hold down buttons 4 & 6 to toggle the different display settings.
8 or 10 digits.to get it to work correctly.
Cdr 500 was a cost option in lieu of car400 rad/cass.

John.
I've tried this and nothing  :(

John.
I have a CDR500 head unit.  It's pretty basic to look at, the FM reception is rubbish, and nothing on the dashboard display, even after pressing buttons 4 and 6 as described earlier.

Would the CDR500 have still been fitted with a multichanger?  As there's definitely a mounting bracket in the boot for one in the boot.  To be honest, if I can't get an original looking setup at a reasonable cost, I'll go out and get a cheap new head unit from somewhere, and do away with the dashboard display facility altogether.  I only need a decent signal for Radio 2, it's about all I listen to.

The range of head units available in the Omega seems bewildering compared to what was in the Senators/Carltons that I'm more used to.  In those you either seemed to either get the Blaupunkt twin tape/cd set up on the earlier cars, or the Grundig system with 10-disc autochanger on later models.

You wouldn't have an Autochanger as well as a CD-head unit, as far as I'm aware. They may have come out the factory with the bracket installed but no autochanger fitted, even if you opted for the CDR unit from new, but I doubt it (no idea why you'd request a single CD player over the standard fit autochanger, either)

DC022 is the autochanger you'd want with it, too. I see you point, you just want a thing to play Radio 2. For donkeys years we didn't have FM, in the end it turned out to the the head unit.

There was a fair old choice, which changed from PFL to MFL, then FL, true.  :)

full procedure is
To reprogram, make sure ignition is switched to position 1 or 2 (doesn't really matter which) Turn off the Radio, Press and Hold Presets "3" & "5" (or 4 & 6 depending on stereo model) at the same time, whilst switching the radio back on, and this will toggle between the two display modes.

Poor reception could be water damage in the roof aerial base.If you only want it for the radio any model will do car300/400 etc.

I've tried this. With radio off and ignition to postion 1, the top half of the display shows the date. When holding buttons 4 & 6 then switching radio on, the date on the display goes off and thats it!

Which part of the display should show what radio channel I'm on? I'm asking because the brake pad warning message is permanently on in the middle of the display. I presume the sensors are shot. Will the warning message override the radio display?

Good shout with the radio ariel, it doesn't look very clever. Can it be got at without removing the headlining?

Radio frequency/name replaces day/date when on.Just to clarify the ign and radio need to be on then you switch the radio off and then hold the 2 relevant buttons in and then switch the radio back on again.
Are there any pixels missing from the mfd as it's very rare in a car that age to not to have at least a few missing.

I would also check that all 3 rows of the power plug are connected at the back (top one provides display info) and the centre pin of the push on aerial connector is ok as this also causes reception issues.

Well I think I may have found the cause of the lack of dashboard display.....

Clearly someone has been messing about before, and not done a very good job. Numerous wires broken or disconnected.  At least it appears that they have tried to reconnect the original connector.

Is there a colour coded wiring diagram list so I know what is supposed to go where?

That's spot on thank you.  ;D I guess this will keep me amused working out which wires are not connected that should be!

I'd only worry about the top row as everything else is working.

And the display type toggle, some stereos have 3 types - 8 digit, 8+2 digit (don't ask!) and 10 digit.  So you might have to do it 2 or 3 times to toggle around all the options :y

If your 1997 car is PFL (last letter of VIN being a T or V), then you have 8 digit display. If MFL (last letter being W), it will be 10 digit.

Is this a cd multi-changer holder or is it for something else?  There's no wiring leading to it, I was perhaps thinking it was for a changer when it might be for something different....
