Plus of course the Germans developed, built and deployed both a rudimentary cruise missile[V1]along with a ballistic missile[V2] and were working towards the intercontinental ballistic missile with sufficient range to reach the continental United States.Facilities being bombed/overrun and wars end preventing the latter which was probably just as well otherwise the clamour from the American population to withdraw troops/aircraft back to homeland defence would have been enormous.

Ah, yes, that all was very true and it is now debated as a 'counter factual history' issue into the if's, what maybe's, and all possible outcomes if the Nazis had been given more time to develop and produce their "Vengence" weapons, and if Hitler had not handicapped the required engineering process by ensuring by his many mis-calculations the earlier final defeat of his forces than could have been possible. IF the war had carried on to the latter half of 1945, with the Third Reich remaining almost complete until then.........counter factual history clicks in yet again!!

Thank God it is all complete speculation now and the actual facts are what they are. 8) :y

I seem to recall seeing a programme centred around him some time ago, although I can't now recall what it was titled or on what channel but I'm sure they used computer imagery to show his battle tactics etc.

There certainly was a programme about the lead up to his demise a year or two back, and the question who or what finally destroyed his tank, him and his crew in Normandy.  One theory was that a Canadian Sherman tank of the Sherbrooke Regiment, in a group of 6, fitted with the high powered 75mm cannon, destroyed the Tiger.  Another theory is that Wittmann's tank blew up after an internal explosion. This is supported by the claim that witnesses found Wittmann's destroyed tank with the turret blown clean off, along with the crew's bodies jettisoned clean out landing far away from the Tiger, with no evidence of the tank's hull being penatrated by any shells.

However, it is yet another historic event that will always be debated in academic circles with many theories suggested, and the real truth now only known to God! ::) :D ;)

After posting the above, I must add before some smart arse does it for me, that all usual traditional factual and verified scources record a British Sherman Firefly tank of the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry having taken out Michael Wittmann's tank.  However, that is now questioned by some who were behind the programme I was referring to, as the British tanks are now believed to have been too far away from  Wittmann's Tiger to land a decisive blow. But the Canadian tanks, equipped with their 75mm cannon, have been calculated to be much closer and well within their killing range.

So, as I said, the "facts" will be debated forever! ;)

How very true :y :y

The trouble is in the academic, historian, world there are endless examples of where "the facts" are seen by many to exist, but then a number of people get together and dispute those "facts", and then can come up with a whole series of counter factual "facts" that justify their argument. Then they claim the"facts" are not "irrefutable".

The list of examples of this is endless but some examples like Wittmann's death are:

The involvement of King Richard III in the murder of the princes in the tower

Queen Elizabeth I involvement or not in the death of the wife of Robert Dudley, Ist Earl of Leicester (boy friend of the Elizabeth)

The sinking of the Titanic......numerous theories and versions of "the facts" about the lead up to, the actual sinking, and the rescue of passengers or lack of it

Churchill and Roosevelt knowledge or not of the Pearl Harbour attack before it happened

Hitler's suicide or not in his Berlin bunker, and his "life" or not beyond 1945..........numerous distortions of known facts, and the promotion of alternative "facts".

President Kennedy's assassination...........numerous versions of "the facts"

The Moon Landings...................

9/11..................

etc, etc, etc.   :D ;)
