Ever since my ex and I rented a Ford Crown Victoria back in 1990 during one of our holidays in the States, with all the comfort, technology and big 5 litre engine you could want then, I have wanted one.

Another thread by an American member about importing a British Omega to the USA reminded me of my old wish, and I have just found these ex-police "interceptors" on Ebay:

They are not exactly cheap, but by golly they are very tempting. With the Californian examples, as mentioned in the advert, they are rust free due to the climate, and then there are all the police extras on them..........

.. and about double the weight to haul around.

the police badges and decals are true as we could get them, it has the 4 litre v8,but with proper manual box,has terrific road presence and never fails to turn heads with a quick glance it is extremely similar to a vic crown,but uk built!

Ah, but these cars, like so many in the States, are designed not for speed but constantly cruising across the open country for hours if necessary; land cruisers

What is the top speed of these police interceptors?  In the standard Crown Victoria we hired all those years ago, with a 5 litre engine, it certainly was not up to the sprint, but glided around up to the then common 55 mph speed limit (we pushed it up to 70 when in open territory as the Yanks do), but it was certainly not a speed car. These police ones must be different, but whatever, they are as I said land cruisers

Not so much geared for it, but they have no speed limiters fitted like ours.

Although the trailers are clearly longer, the all up weights are broadly similar to ours

An Interceptor has similar performance to a V6 Omega; mid 16 second quarter mile and a top speed between 120 and 140mph depending on gearing. They use a fairly low spec engine, and most of the modifications are for durability rather than performance - the 17" steel wheels are a good example.

Nope, because they are generally limited to 90 km/h... Most are therefore geared to be most efficient at around the 80-90 mark...

Simply removing the limiter won't make a given truck significantly faster...

Any x vs y review in Trucking magazine includes the max geared speed, rarely over 60 mph

I've had one, although mine was mid eighties. White, with a white vinyl roof and the only bits of the interior that weren't blood red were chrome plated plastic. It was like driving a 5.0l sofa. A 2.8 Scorpio is a MUCH better car in every respect.

Depends on the gearing, we in Europe have more hp than them spanks,  They haven't quite caught up, I think the vn Volvo is only available with a 610, were-as in Europe we can have 750.

The heavy hitters in the VN are Cat units iirc, the typical Volvo lump is the D13 in 480-520 flavours... The D16 is available in the flagship, but it's a rare beast.

All I know is that a 1968 Fastback Mustang with even the great and lovely Steve McQueen needed anything more than a top speed of 96 mph when going around the streets of San Francisco!

Mind you the out of City scenes may have needed 90 mph!

Would take to long, but European trucks are safer, than American units, and we have one set of cu. Regulation,the yanks have state regulations, our trucks are 24v,yanks are 12v, we have better braking systems.
