(we pushed it up to 70 when in open territory as the Yanks do)

Do that these days and the "big rigs" will be sailing past you like you are on a sunday drive! I had one chasing me down a hill on the Interstate and I was already doing 90..

Their trucks are geared for it :y Also some states, albeit not many have no speed limit on open roads in daylight

Not so much geared for it, but they have no speed limiters fitted like ours.  ;)

It also accounts for the common sight of large vehicle skid marks on the roads and tyre shells strewn by the roadside.  ::)

"Road gators" IIRC?

And yeah, granted going back up hill we were steaming past them like they were stood still as they crawled down to ~40mph.. I wonder how much they are hauling, because they aren't short of engine, that's for sure.

Even without a limiter, you would struggle to make a European truck exceed 70 on a level road ;)

Although the trailers are clearly longer, the all up weights are broadly similar to ours ;)

An Interceptor has similar performance to a V6 Omega; mid 16 second quarter mile and a top speed between 120 and 140mph depending on gearing. They use a fairly low spec engine, and most of the modifications are for durability rather than performance - the 17" steel wheels are a good example.

Nope, because they are generally limited to 90 km/h... Most are therefore geared to be most efficient at around the 80-90 mark...

Page 30 of this...

Simply removing the limiter won't make a given truck significantly faster...

Any x vs y review in Trucking magazine includes the max geared speed, rarely over 60 mph

Found these two links that are very interesting

I certainly have been out paced in my Omega by a super charged Volvo tractor unit pulling a trailer before now! :o :o :D ;)

Yup, I'd love one, think they'd be great.

While we're on american cars, one of my favourite classics, Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, just so cool!

I think Cagney and Lacey drove something similar. :)

The second link can largely be dismissed due to being a discussion about a computer simulator with more holes than a kilo of emmental :D

Or you could have a mercury grand marquis, which is for all intents and purposes the same car but I think more luxurious:

A bit like the difference between having an allegro and and an allegro vanden plas  ;D
