OK, my next step is to reset the airbag light.

Then, check the connections behind the drivers side kick panel.

All the door connections have been checked.

So how much does a new sensor cost then? and how much would they charge for the replacing work?

I paid £37 for the sensor, their Tech II costs £44.50, then you've got the labour charge for removing the door card, changing the sensor, plus refitting the door card, guess 1 hours labour?

Their labour charge is £85 per hour.

Is this door the one that was repaired for rust - if so, could it be that they didn't put it back properly and you have water ingress where you shouldn't?
Could the sensor be affected by water ingress..? have you taken the door card off and see if it is wet or in a position where it might get wet?

I don't know how the sensor is positioned (I did take my door card of some time ago, but I don't remember the sensor's position..), but since the door is a 'wet' design i.e. water should run inside the door along both edges I would expect the sensor and cabling to be water-tight?

The point I am trying to get at is that if the sensor may have indeed suffered water damage, then the cheapest route to follow would be to get a new one again and this time try to sort out the water problem as well...?

The car is now on it's 3rd airbag sensor.

Original - lasted about 2 years.
Replaced under warranty - lasted about 18 months.
Replaced - lasted about 3 months.

I have taken the door card off twice, one at TheBoys, everthing was dry and clean, we took the sensor off, cleaned up the contacts, then it came back on again within about 3 hours.

Bought a new sensor, still the inside of the door was dry and clean, replaced the sensor.

It's got to be something else.

TheBoy also cleaned up the multi-plug for the door electrics.

The only thing left is the connections behind the drivers kick panel.

Just reset the airbag light, tried it a few times, OK at the minute.

If the light is now off then the next step is to check if the airbag sensor is actually working or not. To do this, place tour car perpendicular to your wife’s car, then….

OK, joking aside, how easy would it be to replace the loom feeding the sensor?
Can you get a sensor from the scrappies - side airbags have been fitted since the 1998 mini-facelift, so might be the same P/N?
Tunnie - any facelifts with intact front doors in your scrappie...?

Still got the old one, might put that back in and see what happens.

Something has just occurred to me.

Normally, when I plug the TechII or Scantool into the car, it switches the CD player on and it starts playing.

When the airbag light is on it doesn't switch the CD player on.

Any thoughts on that one?

Wouldn't worry too much about that - the radio comes on when doing some diagnoses, possibly the cheap doesn't fire it up if it detects an error before that point.

Interestingly, the radio must be on during g/box upgrade....

Hmmm...the cheapo doesn't seem to read my g/box....wonder if it would if I turned the radio on.

The point I was making earlier, it doesn't seem to matter whether the audio is switched to tuner or tape, as soon as I plug in, it goes to CD.
