More power and better fuel economy....

One has to ask why the manufacturers ever anxious for better figures don't  use these maps as standard.? Could it be that components cannot  take the extra stress.. that being the case you wouldn't want to buy a s/h car that had been stressed up and thrashed and then reverted to factory spec.....

You might have heard that I was once the proud owner of a Morris Marina 1800TC Coupe.  :)

It had a thick black stripe right down the centre of the BL Mustard coloured bonnet and very successful it was too!  :y

Maybe Lord Opti could have saved his £450 and got his paintbrush out instead?  :D  ;D

Surprised a 3rd party tool is allowed write access to such a critical component as engine map, you would have thought Jag would have locked that down for you average DIY'er  :-\

How can they (or any other), it would also block engine sw updates.

Anyway, the system can detect non signed engine maps and will record it.

Quiet simple, its wont meet emissions with the new map (and the manufacturer has to met far more than just the MOT test emissions)

There are also instances where manufacturers will fit the same engine in different models (or different trim levels of the same model) with different power outputs. For example, Saab would sell you three versions of a 2.0t 4-pot with anything from 150 to 180 to 210 bhp. All identical and all capable of being mapped to about 230bhp.

You will also see manufacturers mapping cars lower so they don't 'embarrass' their own cars further up the model range. The instance of this that readily springs to mind is the 987 Cayman S vs the 997 911.

That's okay on a diesel, as long as the remap doesn't make it smoke.  ;D

I've been using the Mondeo as my daily for the last couple of weeks and even though it goes quite well with its Transit engine, an extra 45 bhp is tempting.  :-\  ::)

What engine Sir Tig? My 2.0L ecotec doesn't need any more. ::)

2.2TDCi producing 172 bhp, so allegedly it could be boosted to 217 bhp.  :)

I assume an extra 45 bhp would give a noticable difference in performance?  ???  :-\

I also assume that I can send the bills for the extra fuel that I'll consume to Lord Opti, as it will be his fault!  :)

Of course. I give you my word as a gentleman that I will pay. :)

I've decided against. Went out with doggie yesterday afternoon and found that, for the conditions available to me, my astra has sufficient power. It gets along the road quite well and, although an extra 40bhp sounds appealing, where would I use it?  :-\

Same with our Tourer, it has more than enough power given cameras/traffic etc.

Some available gains are impressive, I know the Saab turbo petrols respond well, as does the ubiquitous VAG 2.0 turbo petrol that's in pretty much everything these days.

I've always wondered about the merits of a plug in box Vs a 'proper' remap though.  ??? Clearly the former is more easily removed, but I wonder if it's as good for the engine.  :-\

Prior to the Viezu V-switch I purchased a tuning box from TDI Tuning which fitted under the bonnet. It cost around £350 and was utter crap, with no gains whatsoever. I sent it back for a refund. It was supposed to give an extra 60 BHP and 60 FT LB of torque. :-[........in reality it gave SFA.

As far as I am aware the V-Switch provides a new map (just like a proper remap) where a 'piggy back tuning box' simply disrupts the incoming signal (I think).

Car will now hit a genuine 100 MPH in less than 9 seconds (on a private road, obviously) according to my Racelogic GPS data logger. :)
