Hi TheBoy

I knew someone could put me right on the two bladed sender.

Just for anyone else reading this, the latest update regarding the water gauge sender, as already mentioned I ordered it from www.online-teile.com based in Germany, didn't I get an e-mail the very next day saying they no longer had that part in stock and credited my payment card  :(.

I have now placed the order with www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk and so far received a message saying the order is being processed, which was four days ago.
There seems to be an awful lot of sellers out there advising items which they don't have in stock and it's only after someone orders the part that they find they can't get it, to me that's a real pain in the backside.

I have a gut feeling I shall be fitting a used one, that's if I'm lucky enough to find a second hand one, but for now I'll see what transpires regarding the order for the new one.

Watch this space!!

Hi Guys

Thank you both for your replies they are much appreciated, I'm uncertain if the same sensor is used on the Rover P38, if it is I'm assuming it's not under the same part number and unless it can be cross referenced life can become difficult.

It seems one sensor is easier to get hold of than the other, but for the benefit of anyone else who reads this post, this is what I’ve found out so far.

I contacted a Vauxhall main agent who informed me the part I needed was no longer serviced by them, but they did give me some part numbers for it, 90510660 and also the Opel equivalent number 1338459.

There are two water temperature sensors, the one nearest the bulkhead which is green in colour, I think is to do with the ecu but I’m not 100% sure, no doubt someone can correct this if I’m wrong, it has two blade connectors in it and the Vauxhall part number for it is 90487859.

The other which is nearest the radiator is black or dark grey in colour and only has one blade connector, this is the one which controls the water temperature gauge (90510660).

In trying to search for the sender by using the part number, I haven’t had much luck, apart from one website which was partially down at the time, www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk a bit pricey at £38.95 but I guess this is what happens when parts become more difficult to obtain.

In the meantime I found another website which is where I’ve ordered it from, www.online-teile.com it’s based in Germany and the cost was £38.64 including vat, shipping and currency exchange through PayPal, so not much difference in the prices.

I’ll update this post just to let the forum know how I get on regarding delivery as I have never dealt with this company before, plus purchasing from abroad.

I’ve also included a few photos with measurements of both the ecu and water gauge senders as it maybe of use to someone else with the same issue. http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x401/skyhawk2000/P1210435.jpg

Hi Guys

Can anyone out there help me, I'm trying to find somewhere I can purchase a water gauge temperature sensor for the Omega 2.5TD, it's the part which screws into the cylinder head.
Vauxhall's part number for it is 90510660, unfortunately they no longer stock this item.

I'm after a new one rather than a used one, I've tried searching on the internet but haven't found anywhere in the UK which has one in stock, obviously not all places appear  on search results.

I've even thought about purchasing from abroad but the language barrier is a bit of a pain.

Does anyone know where I can buy a new one of these items from in the UK or abroad if they have dealt with companies and had no issues in doing so.

Cheers

Clive

Hi cam in head

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at the unit you've got but I think mine is a completely different animal to what you have, I'll post some photos on here as soon as I can find out how to upload them.
It's far better than trying to describe things, but coming back to my instrument cluster, it's very much looking as though it's going to be one of the following options:

Buy a new one (arm and a leg job).
Buy a second hand one ( trouble with that is, how long will it last or indeed if there are any issues with it. If there are any it would mean pulling it out all over again, which is a bit of a pain)
Last, find a company who specialises in repairing them.
Whatever happens I will defiantly post the outcome as it may be useful to anyone else with a similar problem at some point in the future.

As I say I will try and post some photos on here and you will then see what mine looks like or anyone else who's got a similar problem.

Right fellas

First of all, don’t turn the ignition on whilst the panel is removed, I’ve been there done that on a pre facelift one I used to own.
I didn’t take the instrument panel out but I’d taken the steering wheel off and obviously the airbag, I think the job I was doing was something to do with one of the stalks, anyway I reconnected the battery turned on the ignition to check if things were working ok.
Disconnect battery again and put everything back together, steering wheel air bag etc. switched on the ignition, didn’t the airbag warning light stay on.
I was a bit worried about driving the car with it on, so had to get a mobile auto electrician to out, about 10 minutes work with his laptop, £50.

Right back to my present problem, I don’t know if I’ve opened a can of worms, I never thought about getting a scrap one to look at first, anyway it’s out of the car now and looking at it I’m thinking have I got to buy the whole instrument panel.

Tell me what you think or indeed if there are any further tests I can do at this stage.
How do I post jpeg images on this forum, you will then be able to see what I’m looking at, much better than trying to describe it.

Hi Cam in head
yep I think it's got to be the gauge that's shot, looks as though my next job is take the instrument cluster out not sure if it can be done without take the steering wheel off.

Hi Guys Thank you both for your replies, Andy isn't connecting a potentionmeter between the pin in the plug and earth the same thing, I'm asking because I'm not really electrically minded.

Also could there be a break anywhere else, although I must admit I did get a reading of 11.9 volts at the plug pin.
Does this wire connect straight back to the gauge from the sensor??
I assume if I take the gauge out I should be able to test it, any ideas on how ??

Thanks for your help

Hi Guys

I'm really hoping someone out there can help me, first off I'm talking about a Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD the one with the 6 cylinder diesel lump in it although for my problem I don't think it matters what engine is in it.

My problem, the water temperature gauge has stopped working by that I mean the needle doesn't move off zero even when the car is up to full running temperature.

What I've done so far, both sensors have been removed from the car, the plug to the sensor nearest the bulkhead has two pins in it, when a voltmeter is connected to them and the ignition is switched on I get a reading of 5 volts.

The plug which fits onto the sensor nearest to the radiator has one pin in it when a voltmeter is connected to the pin and battery earth and the ignition is switched on I get a reading of 11.9 volts.
If I then connect a variable 1k Ω potentiometer between the pin in the plug and battery earth thus bypassing the sensor and switch the ignition on the water temperature gauge does not move, if I turn the spindle on the potentionmeter and check again the water temperature still does not move.

I'm assuming the senor with the single pin plug is the one which controls the water gauge, has anyone got any ideas where to go from this point??

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light

Clive

Andy

Many thanks for the manual link that will come in real useful as I don't think I'll be getting rid of the car any time soon and it certainly beats what I have on DVD.
I think I'll give the main agents a call and see how much they are charging for the sender and of course a new seal, I'm hoping it shouldn't be too expensive.

If I do buy the part from them I'll get back on here with the part number and price, it may come in useful for anyone else who has the same problem, mind you once I've got down to the sensor I'll check the wiring first as already been suggested.

Thanks again

Clive

Hi Fellas

Andy H, thanks for the tip about the manual I’ll have a look around for a download, the disk I bought some time ago for the Omega isn't up to much.

Shackeng
I’ve done the glow plugs in June this year 2016, I’m inclined to go along with how long you said it takes to get the manifold off and with regards to the nuts which are nearest the bulkhead, I usually slacken all the nuts off first then either shove a short piece of garden hose onto them so it fits tightly so I don’t drop them when unscrewing them the rest of the way off or pad the socket out with masking tape.

The first time I did the job didn’t I manage to drop a nut and sods law it lodged somewhere in the engine and took an age to find, when your looking into a mass of engine it’s not easy to see them.
Coming back to TheBoy’s time of doing it, maybe it’s me getting old but it would take me 10 minutes just to get the tool box out and sort out what was needed for the job, TheBoy your hands must be a blur when doing it ;D ;D.

My experience of getting the manifold off is it’s real back breaking to get at the nuts at the bulkhead end and when I’ve got them all off it’s then a swine of a job trying to lift the manifold off the studs without it fouling the bulkhead.
Anyway, I had a gut feeling the water temperature sender unit would be under the darn manifold.
Andy H said the engine is the same as the P38, I remember now I used the same gaskets which are used on the P38.

Does anyone know if the water sender unit is the same as the P38 being as they are the same engine, I don’t want to stick the wrong one in! what a pain that would be having to do the job all over again.
I'm guessing there wouldn't be much point in contacting anyone selling P38 parts to confirm if the sender was the same because there are usually none committal that's why I try and find out on the forum from  someone that's already been there if you get my drift.

Thanks again chaps for your advice.

Hi Andy

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I have got a manual, well its on disk I bought it off ebay some time ago, only trouble is it says refer to operation sheets for some of the dismantling and unfortunately the disk doesn't come with any sheets show on it , so its only part of a manual.

I've also got Haynes manual because it does cover some of the parts common to diesel and petrol but its mainly body parts that are similar, I guess I was hoping someone on the forum had already done the exact thing I need to do, but thanks again for your reply.

Hello TheBoy

Thanks for your quick reply, sods law under the the inlet manifold and I bet there's no chance of getting at them unless I take the manifold off?
I'm guessing you don't know off hand where I can buy both of the senders from??

Do you know which one is for the gauge although if replacement involves getting the manifold off maybe it would be prudent to renew both??

Thanks again for your help

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Omega Water Temperature Sender Unit
« on: 04 December 2016, 22:57:18 »
Hi Guys

First off, I’m talking about a year 2000 Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD, in other words the one with the 6 cylinder BMW lump in it.

I’m having some trouble with the water temperature gauge, the indicator needle hardly moves and that’s after about 30 miles of driving, the car heater is working fine.
I’m assuming the fact the needle does move but only very slightly the fault must be the sender unit(s).

Questions:

Is there only one sender unit for the water temperature gauge?

Where does it (they) live, I’m guessing under the darn inlet manifold?

Does anyone know the part number for them or better still where I can buy one, other than the main agents that is?

Thanks for your help

Clive
