Like the look of your car mate - looks smart.

Whats with this drifting - its only a power slide - surely if you are driving on a race track the skill is lapping the fastest.  To do this you have to drive smoothly and keep on the racing line - drifting or powersliding only scrubs off speed - where's the skill in that?  Its like the goalkeeper who always punches the ball rather than catching it - pure show.

Comment from a former track racer - who can powerslide a car for show if pressed  ;)

Bless,
Drift is a race style in itself, which is scored not necessarily on who wins the laps, but who exudes the most style...eg, most sideways.

It's MASSIVE in japan, and it takes an inordinate amount of skill to keep drifting ALL THE TIME, flicking from drift to drift, whilst being in close proximity to other cars.

Its not racing in the traditional sense and cant be compared.

Ha, yeah sorry bout that.
just came out.

I'm no drifter myself, but i've been involved in a lot of clubs and meets where drift is the main focus, and i can tell you its far from poncy.

In fact its so main stream that there was a multimillion £ film made entirely about it....
Guess which one?

fast and the Furious - Tokyo Drift.

Just because you think its not valid doesn't mean there aren't thousands of people out there doing it. In fact i do believe there is a drift track day at Pembrey next weekend.

You know, for all the people that dont do it.

dont get me wrong,
Ive got waaaay more respect for someone who can drive fast and has guts like Colin McRae for instance.

But every style has its place.

Some people might ask why people bother doing rally at all, when you could just do it on a track.....its about more than the race.

In America there is a league called formula Drift, It backed by all the big companies and although highly commercial, like Nascar!!!! it has a huge following and some big name drivers competing.

And like i said, Japan was where it all originated from. They say that it started as a natural style from the mountainous regions and the winding roads. The aim being to feel the curve and control the car in a smooth and controlled manor with precise vehicle placement and awareness.

Just what i've gather over time

Seen the film - fantastic story line (  :-? [smiley=lolk.gif] ) - nice motors - a lot of NOS mod'd motors.  Clever driving - I think not.

Still if thats your bag then go for it  :y

LOL!  Loving the above convo!

(FYI on the film, didn't see much NOS in Tokyo drift, only the first one. (NX was the nitrous sponsor in the second)  Who needs NOS to drift?)
But you gotta admit it takes some skill!  When the main bad character (DK) drifts up the spiral ramp, and his car barely fits in it!  That was done by the real DK, who played a cameo part as on of the fishermen.
(Yes, I know, I'm a Fast and Furious geek...lol)

But yes, it's a completely different type of motorsport, based on style rather than speed.  Kinda like the Tour de France vs BMX!!!  Same vehicle, different objective.  And the way some of those cars are mod'd... WOW...  I've seen some Silvias with the engine moved back 6 inches to shift the weight balance!  Amazing stuff.  The pros pull out all the stops.

Anyway, like you said, each to their own.   But I'm not gonna lie...  I originally got into Omegas for drifting!
(Drifting in cheaper RWD cars is also known as tramp drifting!)
I only recently found out that most of them don't have a LSD!  Which is why it's so hard to get sideways in them.  Although, with enough revving, you can get some sideways action and get some tyre smoke!  Wet is definately a lot easier!!!!  :y

tell me about it, rained a touch here yesterday and i was all over the shop lol.
I loved the fact that the real Dk did the fishermen bit in tokyo drift, was a fitting moment!

I think in reality, a decent drift car has stiff suspension, and low profile tyres.....without this there is too much bounce and give in the setup and the tyres tend if anything, to have MORE grip therefore making it harder to drift. Or maybe instead of more grip, it is an inconsistency in the nature of the grip  :-? :-/ ::) ha

anyways

As you may have noted in previous posts, I myself am not a drifter, and if anything i consider it quite an abusive style of driving. All that tyre smoke and squealing is so wasteful. So in that sense i agree with you.
As a driver who operates on a budget, i would not think about driving my only vehicle in this manner, because if i break something A) this is my only car, B)i'm poor, so would not be able to fix!! lol

I consider myself a driver and not a "License Holder", like my Girlfriend.
I like to think i can drive well...
And i would not judge driving ability, nor measure it, by the ability to drift....not even close.

Real driving to me, is someone like Mark Higgins

All in all, i'm with you lol
