A few questions if anyone can help
« on: 17 May 2011, 10:51:32 »

All on my 1995 elite x30xe saloon

1. What size are the front and rear speakers.

2. one of my rocker cover gaskets is leaking, I am going to do them all for the sake of it, Is it a hard job and is it just one gasket per head or 2 as the ones I have look a bit small so I was wondering if I needed 2 left and 2 right ones??

3. My traction control doesn't seem to work. The switch illuminates, the fuse is ok, but no light ever appears on the dash. Anything else to check?

4. When starting up cold the car idles at around 1200-1300 rpm then drops to 500rpm. it doesn't stutter or anything but i've never had a car rev so low? Also sometimes when pulling away it can be extremely lumpy.

I've only had the car a week so i'm just trying to sort out minor niggles, It could do with a proper service which i'm doing next week so that might help the running.

Any help would be appreciated.  :P

By pressing the switch, you are disabling the traction control.
If the TC light on the dash illuminates when you have TC enabled, that means the computer has decided you are about to lose grip and has taken over to correct the issue

I know how the system works, In either instance the light doesn't come on, and pressing the button makes no apparant difference to the amount of traction etc.

Have you actually driven the car hard enough to make it lose grip to see if the TC takes over?

PS
I'd recommend a private road for that test, or somewhere very quiet at the least.

If its like the abs system the bulb makes up part of the circuit so no bulb = no worky

Re number of rocker gaskets:

There are two different types, I assume they swapped at some point from one to the other.

One type has 4 seperate gaskets (total) to do both banks (2 gaskets per bank), and the other type have 2 gaskets (1 per bank)

If you get the replacements that is 1 gasket per bank they will slot straight in however the other type will need a "bridge" of sealant putting in the gasket channel on the cam cover in 2 places to join the 2 together.

This will become apparent when you have the covers off

Chances are that if your replacements look small you only have replacements for one side.

Camcover gaskets are one of the things that Genuine Vx is recommended for... Some people have had pattern ones fail within a year.

Obviously you'll need to clean the breathers through too ;)

Trivial daft things like that can be overlooked, obviously if there was a serious fault it would fail,

To be hoped you don't get into the sales side of things. If ABS is fitted, I would expect it to work.

I think you are missing the point ....

You say the TC does not work .. by knowledge and feel ...

You say the bulb never illuminates ... ever no matter what switching is made... or on ignition on.

Therefore .. if bulb has been removed (or blown) it cannot illuminate....  if it WAS illuminated it would indicate a fault in the TC that TURNS TC OFF ... which is .. probably .. why it doesn't work.

My money is on the previous owner removing the TC bulb to hide a known fault ....

Moral .. check all bulbs illuminate at ignition switch on when buying a car .. :)
