Also a gallon of oil was 10/-.

All at S.G. Smiths in Downham, Bromley :)

It wasn't a bad guess! ;)  ;) I just remeber my Mum saying that my dad used to earn around £9 a week in the early 70s but 10/- would buy half of the contents of the local shop. But the 70s bought with it massive inflation.

Oh yes Andy, you are so right.  We had the fuel crisis in 1973 with OPEC blackmailing the West, where we were queing for fuel if you could get it, and the rotated electricity black outs with the miners on strike.  That was just the start of what I call the crap 70s, with constant strikes, rubbish British cars, and no political leadership with foreigners calling us the "sick man of Europe" and going down the toilet!  They were soooo right!!  Then along came the goddess, the greatest women since Elizabeth I, and the strongest politician since Churchill; Maggie Thatcher :-* :-* :-* :-* 8-) 8-)

Remember getting a gallon of 2* and 2 strokes of the 2 stroke pump and still get change from quid in the late 70s.

Think an fs1e would fold in the middle if I sat on one now, fuel is not the only thing that has inflated.

I can only ever remember seeing one of these 2 stroke oil pumps. Couldn't you dial in somewhere what ratio of mix you wanted?  :-/

A mate's Fizzy was the very first 'bike' I had a go one, up & down the 'backs' (between the terraced housing - like the opening shots of Boreination St)

Ha Ha, you're only trying to catch us out giving our age away!

It was 2/- per gallon for me. (10p to you youngsters) We paid a bit more for Cleveland Discol for performance bikes, scramblers and trials:y :y :y

Now you mention it I think you're right. I seem to remember a twisty knob on the top giving the choice 1:20, 1:25 or something like that. Most of them looked like fire extinguishers and came on a little trolley. 7p per shot rings a bell, 1 shot being sufficient for 1/2 gallon.

As a teenager I worked a garage forecourt ... in the days before "self service" ... from my point of view the best customers were those who wanted 4 gallons of "best" (5 star) .. simple reason ... it was 4s 11d a gallon, they would pay a pound and allow me to keep the change if I had done the tyres, oil and windscreen .. so I made 4d ... doesn't sound a lot but my wages were 2s 6d an hour.

Putting that into modern amounts .... 4s 11d ... a fraction under 25p a gallon ... 2s 6d an hour ... 12.5 p an hour... a 4d just under 2p .... but .. looked at another way ...

2s 6d (30d) an hour was .5d per minute so a 4d tip was the equivalent of 8 minutes work ....

So if someone today is on £12 an hour it would be a £1 60p tip .. and I don't see many folks giving £1 60p just to have their tyres and oil checked and the windscreen cleaned .. !!!!

Everything is relative ....  :)
