Thanks for the wake up call Markl. I thought we had it bad in Cornwall, what with the tractors and the summer tourist invasion. Just goes to show that we don't know how lucky we are.

I wonder if there is any common decency left at all in some of our big cities. :'(

Interesting about the "uninsured bangers" from Europe. In Spain there is the same problem. UK plated cars here for longer than 6 months, some we have seen have been here over three years. No MOT, no tax and no valid insurance. Spanish cars have to display their ITV expiry date sticker in the windscreen and carry insurance and driving licence docs at all times. It is about time the UK followed suit.

The authorities don't seem to give a damn. Maybe it is easier to crack down on Spanish reg cars in Spain and UK reg in the UK. It is high time there was a standard across the EU to truly facilitate cross border travel etc.

If they are not insured then they will lose the money when their cars are smashed up

The situation seems to work like this. Buy an old banger in a European Country (usually Germany but not exclusively so) drive it into the UK, and then drive around with impunity safe in the knowledge that you have immunity to any Gatso offences or Congestion Zone charges and are completely exempt vehicle tax (are you reading this Gordon). If you fancy some free petrol, no problem simply fill up and drive out. Take a look at the millions owed to Transport for London in unpaid Congestion Zone charges by foreign plated vehicles. Well guess what most are not foreign they now live in the UK but have never been registered. Once the car acquires too many Police PNC interest reports dump it on a local council estate, take an Easyjet flight to Europe and buy another. Its hilarious how many gentlemen you see of West African origin (this is not just a European problem, oh no) driving around in German plated bangers.
The Police will often avoid this problem due to the hassle of language and the sheer administrative difficulty of dealing with the situation, but in any case most Traffic Patrol specialists with the knowledge to deal with this have been replaced by far cheaper and much more profitable traffic cameras. Also if your working to meet targets it’s far easier to hit the generally law abiding in order to maximise your ticket count rather then end up spending the afternoon getting some old nail removed to a car pound, and waiting in a Police Station Custody area for hours with the driver for a foreign language interpreter and duty solicitor to arrive (you can add Appropriate Adult, Social Worker and Police Docter if they claim to have Mental Health Issues). Its human nature you take the easy route. Someone tell me this is not true, but trust me it is.

Never had one either, which is why I'm so annoyed with myself over last week's lapse of concentration. Still, it may not happen.... Might have caught them on their doughnut break  ;D

I'm waiting for one in the post  >:( Driving through a confused mixture of 30,40 & 50 mph urban dual carriageways. Drive past a smart sign that usually illuminates at sub-30, in a 30MPH limit. It doesn't light up. "Strange", I think. Look down at speedo and see 36-38 MPH oops!. Look ahead, Talivan hiding under a tree.  >:(

Went back along the same road later on, when Talivan had gone. Smart warning sign now illuminating at indicated 30 MPH  >:(

Fair enough, I was speeding and I'm not trying to wriggle out of it, but if I do get an NIP I will be asking what road safety benefit there is in disabling smart signs, or whether they are after all just out to raise revenue.

Kevin

We have one of those signs around our way, i complained that it didn't work all the time, was told that it was programmed to only come on at certain times when the traffic is at its busiest  :o
Couldnt see the logic myself, why not have the bleeding thing on all the time!!

I'll bet it's got a solar panel on it....  battery saving mode ;D ;D ;D ;D   We've got some with wind generators on too!!  Going to nick one for my caravan... :o

When I taxed my car online last week; all I had to do was supply their reference number (&  payment details) yet I had to go to a police station & produce the relevant documents. I thought the police had this information?

As I replied to a post last week or so, a bloke at work has accumulated 18 or 19 & kept it!  How I haven't a clue!  :-?
