Title: Insignia towing mpg is rubbish
Post by: T.m.f on 05 September 2018, 22:05:24
We used the insignia for towing last bank holiday, towed great plenty of torque but the mpg was worse then my discovery 300tdi,it was down to 26mpg . I expected more wasnt flooring it and used cruise control where i could, and even when its not towing it only gets 45mpg if were lucky,is there anything i can check etc to improve mpg, apart from getting a remap, its a 2.0cdti 160bhp auto sri.

Guess your disco is/was manual?

That would account for the difference I would think. That and all the emissions gubbins on the insignia.  :-\

That doesn't seem too bad to me .... also of course depends what you're towing

My Merc tows at around 33 mpg, the Insignia was about 29 mpg.

Give it a good service, the 2.0 CDTi in the mum bus was just serviced by me. Oil filter, fuel filter, air filter etc.

Noticeable improvement in engine noise, pickup and mpg.

The air filter was shocking, never been changed.

Sounds not unreasonable for a small auto diesel...

The Terracan returns 27mpg towing a 26foot twin axle Elldis & you wouldn't even know it's on the back.

45mpg is about right for that engine, it's what I get with my auto.

Is that a 3litre diesel lump?

Think AA's is the 2.1 litre (220/250) variant.  :-\

Yup, I've heard good things.

A guy in my team recently bought a 2015 E220d saloon (last of the old shape). Performance in that combination is adequate, but its a nice place to sit.  :y

If I were splurging £25k on a car, it'd be hard to look past an s-class. Appeals to me far more than an XJ/A8 or similar.

I like the fact that the XJ looks unique whereas the German opposition all look a bit 'samey'.

I agree, the s-class looks like someone bought an inflatable c-class and then blew it up rather too much. Its the interior I like, IMO far ahead of the competition in terms of visual appeal and "specialness". TBH I'm not that fussed about exterior looks, as long as its not visually offensive, for me its the inside that matters :).

The S Class is a nice place to sit. Its a bit of a lacklustre drive though, if you enjoy your driving.  But it can crunch miles.

I thought it worth ressurecting this as we collected our burger van today.  ::)

130 mile trip in the 1.2T dsg yeti at an average mpg of.... 25.9.  ;D

Admittedly, that was a rather hilly route and the little thing performed very acceptably. Although the smell of dsg clutch backing it onto the drive was alarming.  :o

I'm planning on a maximum of one more run onto the drive and that's it. Thankfully we aren't keeping the yeti or I really would be worried about the clutch life.

On which planet did you think it would be a good idea to tow anything with a 1.2 powered shed :o

Especially one with a chocolate drivetrain...  ::)

Jimmy might have a little pikey palace.  :P  :)

Size isn't everything you know....  ::)                                                                                              Apparently!  :D  ;D

The burger van is a (temporary) necessity.

MTPLM of the pikey shed is 1158kg (MIRO 1025)and the yeti will apparently do 1200kg per the manual and that seems about right.  GTW is not exceeded and nor is the sandal Knitter's 85% "rule", although I am close.

So the numbers all work but I agree it's a very poor choice as a tow car. The van will be doing about another 75-100 miles max and it will then become the welfare block for our build.

After that I will probably break it up and sell some bits and burn the rest. £1500 well spent IMO  :y

Post by: Doctor Gollum on 17 September 2018, 13:23:04
The 85% rule is a bit of a nonsense... A 40 tonne artic will typically have a 26t payload... That's nearly 3 times the weight of the tractor unit ::)

Apparently my trolley will tow almost it's own weight... but then it has a proper gearbox.

Jimbob should take note though... There won't be anything in the service history to say that someone hasn't spent three years of weekends dragging the kitchen sink up hill and down dale :-X

Yup, world's gone mad!  ;D

I've actually revised my prediction. I won't scrap/ set fire to the chassis, as that probably won't go well  ::).

I'll cut it down for use in taking stuff to the tip :).

DG, it's the same logic with the bigger 4x4's, defenders and the like. I regularly see people hauling various thibgs- boats, plant etc that's well in excess of the vehicle's weight. No one bats an eye and as far as I can tell, the world doesn't end!

I saw a fifth wheel towing rig the other day - dually pickup with the fifth wheel in the bed, pulling a caravan the size of a 54 seater coach... That's how you go camping  ;D

Maybe it was made of tin foil to comply with the Caravan Club's 85% rule!  ;D

I really like the 5th wheels, if the finances work they'd be my preferred choice for travelling.

You can get a few that put about 800kgs on the load bed and 3200kgs towed. Cost is probably similar to a large regular caravan and much cooler  8).

Bear in mind that the bed load limit needs to at least match the trailer nose weight PLUS hitch gear... Regardless of towing capacity ;)

Indeed. The ones I saw were specifically developed for UK pickups, that doesn't mean to say the calculation has been done correctly but you'd hope! ::).

There are some that you can tow only if you have the suspension modded to take an increased load bed weight, fair enough but I don't know where you stand insurance wise given the vehicle wasn't type-approved for it! And I would imagine you can kiss any warranty goodbye in any event!

Plus you would have to run air lines to the trailer for the air brakes  ;)
