Speedometer and rpm gauge not working
« on: 07 November 2015, 12:29:55 »

Hi guys, I went to car wash today than gave miggy a nice interior cleaning at home and suddenly speedometer isn't working anymore, the same with rpm gauge. No TC/ABS light on, all the other dash lights and gauges working normaly. I tried to push cluster panel , no result. Is there anything else I can try or is it FUBAR? :-[
Thanks in advance, Stan

I've experienced this problem in the past, you somehow must have blown a fuse, dont know which number but its a 20amp fuse in the middle row  :y

I've checked all the fuses again with volt meter - all fine, so I took cluster out, reseated back -  with no result. Rpm needle is moving a mm up and down when I turn key to contact and continues movement all the time even if I drive. Speedo is completely dead. I took a video of cold start, waiting to be uploaded :'(

Double and treble check F12. Failing that, check connector mounting behind instruments isn't damaged, stopping unit fully seating.

Or even better, well it depends...Been searching on web and it seems it's quite common for GM cluster stepper motors to fail. So I'm thinkinh about taking the cluster appart, write down the stepper motors numbers and find those on ebay. If it happens (IF) to save the problem I will post pics and procedure. Fortune favours the brave  :P

I disassebled instrument cluster today, found two motors inside - part number 91 255 002 65 for rpm and 91 255 003 for speedo.
So I made a call to main dealer just to be told that only entire speedo/rpm unit can be ordered for 230eur :o
Before I try to find those stepper motors on ebay, does anyone know if stepper motors are the same across the range? Old working instrument panel from PFL/MFL can be easily found here for as little as 15eur....I'm thinking of replacing mine with used

Ideally you want one from the same body/engine/gearbox otherwise the fuel gauge/rev counter/speedo will.all.be wrong...

Engine is most critical, followed by gearbox then fuel gauge.

V6/4cyl/diesel not interchangeable.
Gear ratios vary according to engine AND gearbox
Estates have a larger fuel tank, so a Saloon gauge in an estate will under read and vice versa.

Can't get the same model anywhere - went even german ebay....that's when I got the idea of replacing motors only. I really hoped at least stepper motors would be interchangable :'(
