Omega General Help / Leave new battery standing?
« on: 04 December 2015, 12:10:45 »
Battery in the 3.2 is not in great shape, it's around 4.5 years old. Lately I can hear it's very slow to turn over and fire, not helped by being used on average once a week.

I see ECP doing good price on 70Ah battery, just £37 which is not bad.

If I buy one and shove it in the garage, any harm in it sitting there for a few weeks/month maybe before fitting?

I intend to keep the 3 year guarantee copy very safe  ::)

General Discussion Area / Recommend me a Fitness Watch/Tracker
« on: 03 December 2015, 11:49:39 »
Not for me, but a Christmas present.

Needs to track basics like steps/calories etc. Be good if it was waterproof too, so it could be used in a pool.

Considering FitBit, but that's no good for a pool.  :-\

General Car Chat / Dash Cluster lighting.
« on: 30 November 2015, 18:57:52 »
Following some Audi on way home, black A6 on 09 plate. It's pitch black, raining, guess what. No lights on  ::) - Well DLRs front only.

Flash lights, front fogs for a mile or so, sod all.

Managed to pull along side and blast the horn with window down, she did put hers down surprisingly. I errrr "kindly"  ::) - informed her she should put some lights on.

She did  :o

But I noticed the dash was lit up including all dials, now for me if I can't read my dash dials, lights come on. Not always applicable. But most....

Do wonder is it a good idea to have super bright LED DLR's + dash all lit up and no auto lights?

Cars should not illuminate dash as default, I think that's the cause of a lot of no lighters.

Well that and stupidity.

General Discussion Area / Insulating Conservatory Roof
« on: 27 November 2015, 13:03:06 »
At the end of the house, we have a conservatory. It has the usual issues of hot in the summer, cold in winter.

Now in an ideal world, I would bash the thing down and do it right with a full beans extension like MarksDTM has done. My issue is with Little Miss T being 18 months old, a Wedding next year and other things, I don't have £15-30k kicking around.  To top it off this is not a long term house, maybe 3 or 4 years more and we may look at getting something bigger if we can.

Another option was more heaters, but that's like using a blow torch to stop a colander leaking water. A battle you will never win...

So I stumbled across few sites offering insulation. Looks fairly straight forward, using something like super quilt:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/ybs-superquilt-multilayer-insulation-1-5-x-10m/68120

You line the roof with this, fix batterns then Plasterboard it.

This appeals greatly as one side of the conservatory is the garage wall, so doing this, plus plastering the current brick exposed wall would really make it feel more linked to the house.

These image sums it up almost exactly what I am considering....

Has anyone done this?

It does not look *that* hard? Insulate up top, not sure what its held up with first, but then just put some batterns up and board over it?

Any ideas cost wise? At approx guess I'd say the conservatory is 15ft Wide and 10feet long.

Looks like DIY or employing a joiner would be far cheaper way and sourcing materials myself. Rather than external company doing everything.

Thoughts?

General Discussion Area / New Generation Sky Box Launch
« on: 16 November 2015, 12:23:08 »
So on Wednesday the 'Next Gen' Sky boxes will be launched, I know very little about them. Sadly my pass does not let me into the building where it's all being done.  :(

But rumours suggest maybe 8 tuners, 4k was big rumour, I've not heard much on this, but it will be some time before decent content would be broadcast in 4k anyway.

Recordings will be much more cloud based, rather than just on set up box.

So watch this space  :)

Picked up a 20L drum 10/40 Semi for £22+vat   :)

Sat in an Insignia. Still don't like them, seats too hard, no support. Is it just me or do the facelifted ones have tiny dials? Dash cluster is way too small  :-\

Overheard a women at service desk going through her bill, something about a coolant leak. Anyway the bill was £420   :o

She went outside and climbed into her 02 plate Corsa!

Glad I still do DIY  :)

Omega General Help / Creaking Brake Pedal
« on: 10 November 2015, 08:43:12 »
In the 2.2 in stop/start traffic, the brake pedal makes a "creaking sound" quite badly, almost soft knocking sound too when releasing. Been doing it for a while, but steadily getting worse.

Slow speed stuff, so say 10mph, applying brake pedal can hear creaking/rubbing sound. Same with releasing the pedal after coming to a stop, sounds like almost something is rubbing  :-\

Hard to describe, but when releasing can also hear/feel slight knock through the pedal.  :-\

It's definitely not disc related or outside. It's to do with pedal or something behind the dash. So much so can hear it above the radio now.  :(

Any ideas?

General Car Chat / GM Self Levelling Shock Price
« on: 09 November 2015, 18:33:59 »
Anyone bought these recently for a saloon, how much are they on TC?

Considering putting SL back on the 3.2 at the rear, as rear ground clearance has been an issue sometimes on speed bumps.

Currently running standard GM nonSL on 3.2, thinking about putting them on the 2.2. Although I've solved issued with MaxTrac ones, they are clearly a lot firmer.  :(

Been driving the 3.2 over the weekend and today, it's considerably smoother than 2.2 over the rough roads.  :-\

Any experts in the house regarding this?

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/596/pdfs/uksi_20150596_en.pdf.

I have a question on some work which is being planned and want to know if it falls into this, ie does not need full permission. Quite a few details on this, so will save that for a PM to someone  :y

General Discussion Area / More CCTV Advise
« on: 04 November 2015, 22:26:00 »
There are few CCTV buffs on here, looking to install a system here.

Requirements:

- Waterproof, it's for outside use.
- HD Picture - 1080p
- Record on Motion
- Excellent night vision.
- HDD type solution
- At least 2 cameras, 3 preferred.
- Not **too** fussed about remote access via internet, although that would be nice.

Budget: Around £150 max, ideally more around £100

Thinking along lines of this?

The Close I live in is not on Council Land, I belong to a management company which is responsible for the up-keep of the Close. We would like to make a small addition to fencing around the bin collection area, I've contacted our Council who are Surrey Heath. I've been advised we need a 'certificate of lawfulness' due the the fence we want added, is above 1m high.

I understand I need to apply for it here:

http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/

But do I just do the full 'Apply for Planning Permission' on the main link on that homepage, as this certificate is not actually permission.  :-\

It's: - "If you want to be certain that the existing use of a building is lawful for planning purposes or that your proposal does not require planning permission"

General Discussion Area / Kitchen/Bathroom Lighting Advice
« on: 27 October 2015, 21:01:34 »
I recently bought 5 of these bulbs to replace some that had blown, in our bathrooms and kitchen. They are all this type of 'energy' saving bulb...(GUF11/64)

http://www.directtradesupplies.co.uk/product.php/162652/aurora-lighting-11w-gu10-compact-fluorescent-lamp--cool-white-

Within a matter of days, two of the five have failed. One of them failed within 24 hours :(

So much for the '8000 hour lifespan lasts 4 times longer than equivalent incandescent lamp' - Load of b0llocks then.

Question is can I just use 'normal' spot lamps/bulbs? not fussed about these energy saving ones. The ones currently fitted take a good few mins to 'warm up' too.  :-\

These all are bayonet type, they then have a cover that slots over them, like this...

Omega General Help / Rear Shocks - Top Mount
« on: 25 October 2015, 16:29:07 »
Just want to double check, how far you compress these. As they don't tighten up so to speak, I've just been guessing, looking at the 3.2 for reference  ;D

I just swapped the top mounts back to the GM's - I think they are quieter, not sure, will have to wait until my morning commute.

But for reference this is how I've currently done them....

About right?  :-\
