starter motor woes
« on: 03 October 2016, 19:24:28 »

last week I dropped the sump & removed the balance unit so,s I could get a new sump gasket on. I then gave it a service , oil, fuel filters, etc, I cracked No, 1 & 2 fuel pipes whilst my wife turned it over. I saw smoke coming from somewhere from under the turbo area. it is the starter motor. on investigation no wires are burnt & the copper earth wire that comes from inside the actual s/m is actually glowing when the engine is turning over  & it started to weld the washer to the nut (that's how it got ). the wires that feed the motor are ok & it is operating ok. so I'm guessing its an earth problem. but where do I start. :-\

You start with the engine earth lead. Wherever it should be, or is now. You could go to Halfords, buy a new long one, and attach it to a tapped hole on the engine and then back to the battery. But proper diagnosis is always better as you know what the problem actually was, which means you can fix it rather than patch it up.

Any problem that starts after doing work should ALWAYS be investigated by rechecking what you did. Always. Without exception.

I will . but apart from removing electrics from where the injectors are & from the glow plugs to enable me to remove a plug for making it easier to obtain tdc  nothing other than the crank sensor & a new oil level sensor was touched. I will check  the earth from battery to its fixed earth point. I did try turning it over briefly using a jump lead as an earth from body to engine & although it was a very brief on that occasion I never spotted smoke.
