Where abouts in Bristol are you mate?

If you can compile a list of tools needed, I'd be happy to pop over and give you a hand.  :y

If it's the same tensioner as the petrol V6 then all you need is a 15mm spanner and whatever you need to take off to gain access to the belt

I don't know if its the same tensioner but I doubt it. You will need a 32mm spanner to remove the viscous fan if fitted. See link above. :y

I've done plenty of V6 ones, never attempted one on a diesel though.

How hard can it be?  ;D

Very easy, see guide link, which was not specifically for tensioner replacement but will help. :y

Cheers - Does the Fan need to be removed then?

Other than that, just a 10mm Allen Key and 13mm Spanner by sounds of things?

As I was doing the water pump I took the fan off, but trying to visualise it, I think you might get away without. The difficulty will come in trying to get the new belt (assuming one is going on) between the fan shroud and blades. If just the tensioner is going on with the old belt as a get you home, you may get away with the fan on. Let me know if you have any problems, I have got mine on the drive and will remove the covers to check if required. :y :y :y

Put my reg in ECP for a tensioner they say none found. That is just a bearing shown in your link, the tensioner is the whole unit with mounting. I believe it is possible to replace just the bearing, but I can't tell if that's the correct one.  :-\ :-\ :-\

Where's RobG when you need him? ::) ::) ::)

According to my stealer, the bearing does not come seperately, but I'm not so sure, as, certainly on the V6 members have said it can be replaced. The whole tensioner part number is 9118848, and mine has none in stock, so I hope you get lucky. :y :y :y

I don't think that is the correct bearing on ECP, that looks very like the deflection bearing pulley that sits next to the alternator, which ECP mentions. :y PM inbound with my phone number.

The TD tensioners sometimes stick. Its the damper looking part, about 3" long, near the top of the engine.

Might be worth removing, and working it by hand, to see if it will get you home.

**NOTE** waterpump is driven by the same aux belt. It is imperative that the car is not started/driven with a slipping belt.

The tensioner had done a flip and lost all tension on the belt. Manually moved it over by hand and it slotted into place.

Would a old belt which has stretched caused this to happen?

On gayPhone so apologise for crap messages!

P.s Vauxhall want £78 for that £19 part!

Never seen one do that, so can't comment.

If there is any chance of it potentially flipping again, I think I'd change belt anyway  :-\

If stretched enough, yes. Don`t be surprised if tensioner misaligns again

I would definitely fit a new belt when you replace the tensioner, and if the car still has the original water pump, with a rubbish plastic impeller, I would replace that at the same time. :y

I was nice to meet you Paul.  I must add that the information from Shackeng was invaluable.

I've never even seen under the bonnet of a TD before, and quite frankly after seeing it, the V6 is a much nicer place to be.

Paul, I hope you get home without drama.  Get that belt changed asap mate!  :y

Reckon thats just familiarity. The TD engine bay isn't a bad place to be to be honest, just like the V6, looks scary to those not familiar with it :)

You are probably right.  But the Derv is a very dirty thing to work on (I hasten to add that the bay on Paul's car was very clean).

My ONLY experience with Diesel engines is working on Transit Vans.  I hate Derv with a passion.

Did I mention I hate Derv?

I was unable to help Paul to get his car 'fixed' but I did what I could to help him diagnose the true fault and hopefully get him on his way.

Excellent news Paul.... Glad you got home without needing the RAC.  Get a belt and hopefully you should be sorted.

Would be interesting to know if the belt has stretched that much though, so keep us informed.   :y :y

Sure is, which includes changing the water pump (not necessary in your case):

And here's the route of said belt:

Sorted.New belt on.Measured against the old one exactly the same so i,ve a spare now.
Problem was the i dler pulley if thats the name for it, at the bottom of the tensioner which pushes against the belt.
When Broomies Mate looked at it he notced this was sort of vibrating/running out of true &its securing bolt wouldn,t tighten up.
On removal it was obvious a PO had stripped the thread & bodged it with ptf tape!!!  New one on & its looking good.
Thanks again everyone for you time & help.
