Help please! Omega 2.2 running problems
« on: 18 May 2016, 18:33:09 »

Hi all I'm a new omega owner, recently bought a really clean 2.2 cd 2001 model in metallic grey
Bought very cheap from salvage market,I suspect because the previous owner suspected a serious fault?
The problem I thought I'd solved with a new gm cam sensor has surfaced again, basically as soon as the car gets up to running temp, the gearbox goes into limp mode and the eml light stays on
A friend plugged into his laptop and the codes coming up are,p1781 not present and p1740 present
He cleared these down but again as soon as the car gets warm the warning lights come on and the car reverts to limp mode
I've followed a few tips  on here and cleaned the throttle body, replaced the cam sensor with a genuine one, compression test proved all good, changed the plugs so far no success
Any help appreciated, thinking coilpack next?? Car is such a good one I want to sort it out and start using it whilst I have my 1998 E class spruced up,thanks for any help,Danny

Firstly, stop randomly replacing parts, you'll complicate the diagnosis.

What codes were in the gearbox and the ABS ecu?

Actually, they might be the gearbox codes:

P1781 - CAN errors (common when one ECU is in an error recovery mode)
P1740 - Torque signal

Worth seeing whats in ABS as well.

Maf is easy to check...

Unplug it and see if it runs better... if yes, then you need a new maf. If it makes no odds, then you don't. Simples :y

Just a quicky, when it reaches "running temp" what temp is your gauge showing and does it continue to rise towards the hot?
Do the cooling fans kick in?

Unless you bought a genuine sensor from a genuine dealer that you genuinely had to walk into to order and collect it, then you're pissing in the wind :y

Did you buy it remotely or in person?

Price for genuine is around the £70 mark retail. Anything less unless bought "trade price" is most probably a clone. Did the "sealed" bag have the GM hologram?

What is at doubt here is the supplier (vauxparts) of you cam sensor and on whether it is a genuine one....Owing to there being a lot of cheap one's out there and the only way of being sure you have a genuine one is to walk into a main dealer and buy it over the counter...

When tha cam sensors plays up they chuck loads of random codes up. So therefore its best to be sure that your cam sensor is the proper one before looking elsewhere.  :y

Maybe. Possibly. Up to you. Maybe.

If it was in a sealed bag with the correct labelling, then it's probably OK. A poor sensor causes so many odd issues, that the advice of only buying a genuine one directly from a Main Dealer is to save you any further hassle. This also applies to crank sensors across all marques.

They have form, as do other self proclaimed 'genuine' retailers... and you were being evasive with your answer to a simple question.

Only way to be sure is to buy it in person from your nearest dealer. Also, if it doesn't work, you can take it back.

Goodluck returning the Autovaux one.

Incidentally, last one I fitted was local dealer supplied and bagged, not boxed.

You most likely got that response "hmmmmm" because nobody this side of your post knows the true authenticity of the part you bought even though you say it was in a "genuine package". As an example there are plenty of "genuine" Gates timing belts for sale but unless you know what you are looking for then you won't realise that there is a flood of fakes and they look genuine.
There is collective knowledge on here and I'm sure your not wasting your time but it may take time to collect data and help in the best way possible.

I had my cam sensor changed a couple of weeks ago by the guy who does all my repairs. The first one he fitted was supposedly a "genuine OEM sensor" which didn,t clear the slight starting problem that we where trying to eradicate. He then went to Drive Vauxhall in Bury St Edmunds and purchased a genuine GM one and as he said the difference was staggering. So, as others have said, don,t get arsy when people, who are genuinely trying to you, question you as to exactly what you have sourced. Just get the GM one, fit it and see how it goes. Best of luck and hope you had a good weekend away. :y
