Auto Transmission Problem
« on: 11 May 2007, 13:10:37 »

Hi All, had a problem yesterday when I lost the instruments, climate contrtol, hazard light and interior light, drove to work ok this morning without these but when I came to go home the auto box started juddering and reving the engine only moved the car very slowly, just like driving with the brakes on. I found a blown fuse in the panel by the steering column, I replaced this and all the electrics came back on, but the problem with the gearbox still persists, is the gearbox fault just a coincidence or might it be related to the electical fault?

Sounds like the gearbox has gone into limp home mode :( Dig around on the forum to find out how to reset it. (I take it you havn't got the snow/ice mode button depressed :-[)

Have you had any problems with the autobox before this?

I would still say your first port of call on an autobox, before throwing in the towel and taking it somewhere would be to get the car up, get the sumps (2) off, clean / change the filter, and renew the autobox fluid - if you clean the filter rather than replacing its a nice cheap thing to do that often eliminates a lot of autobox probs..

I hope its not too bad  :-/

Hi, thanks for the replies, I did check the snow button but it was o.k. The fluid and filters were changed about five weeks ago, so I think I can rule that out   :'(  I will see if I can find the "how to" on resetting, does it need a tech 2?

Hi Mark, I only found one fuse gone, can't remember the number but it controlled the climate control, instruments, interior light, it was a 20amp. I checked all the other fuses but they were o.k. Is there a relay that controls the gearbox, and how can I tell if it is the gearbox that has gone, or it has just gone into limp mode?

As I well know, this problem can be a pain in the arse... but you will get there!

Getting the gearbox ECU fault codes read will give a good clue.

If it happened at the same time other electrical systems went down, I'd sway towards an electrical issue rather than a mechanical fault..

(but as we recently learned.. that can't be ruled out!!)

Hi if you go to Ebay and look for a OBD 2 code reader and car Diagnostic tool you can plug it in to your car, and you will get any fault codes and clear them if need be. I have just got one from ebay at a cost of £33.99 you will need one with a u480 code book, mine is a little orange one, (I mean my OBD2) but worth its weight in gold.
I hope this will help you get it sorted and save money

Hi yes it can read your engie ecu, gear box ecu, abs ecu and air bag ecu. the only thing it can not do is clear codes on ABS or Airbags, it can work on almost all cars built after 1996, for car pre 1996 you need OBD 1.

With reguard to the fuse blowing , I had a similar occurence when changing the stereo , one of the wires behind the dash was earthing itself on the chassis while I was driving along , the fuse was for the power steering as well I seem to recall which made things interesting :o . Did you do any work on the electrics or disturb the wiring in any way just before the problem?

Hi Steve, yes I refitted the stereo after it had been repaired, will remove the climate control console and thoroughly check the wiring tomorrow, thanks to you all for your help.   p.s. how would this affect the gearbox if no other fuse appears to be blown, probably a silly question but electrics aren't my scene!

just to let you know you do not need a laptop to use the OBD 2 code reader, all of you need is the OBD 2

No, this will NOT work on a 1999 Omega.  Tech2 required, be it cheapo lead which needs laptop, or the real thing (probably real thing, as last time I tried cheapo lead, it wouldn't touch gearbox).

Hi Steve, you were right, I found two damaged wires behind the centre console. Have repaired them now and just trying to find a way to get the car to asautocare in Widnes to get it sorted, he has a Tech2, do not fancy towing it such a long distance , I am trying to find a reasonable recovery firm locally, not easy to do. It cost me £65 to get it taken home on a transporter, a distance of five miles!

Hi Dave, afraid he doesn't do home visits, but as far as I know he is the only independant Tech2 owner within 30 miles, and my thinking is that if the gearbox is knackered he will fit a second hand unit, whereas a Vaux dealer won't, plus the Vaux stealer wants £75 plus VAT per hour!

Soz, don't know.  The 4 speed box fitted to your 2.2 will be AR25, but not sure if mechanical variations, or purely software (the software is defo different, but you won't be changing ecu).

I know of 2 in Saltney, just outside Chester
Roadrunners and MW Performance
as for £75 an hour, Lookers in Chester charge that, Dickens of Wrexham (or Mold) charge 1/2 that!
I paid £35 I think for a gearbox ecu upgrade
No charge when the didn't do one on the wifes claiming it was up to date, so they seem a fair dealer to me.

Hi TB, I am told the box will not fit, but I have managed to source one locally with 12 months warranty, out of a 28,000 miler, for a very reasonable price.

Hi Jimbob, Andy Stockton Autocare in Widnes is fitting the box for me, comes highly recommended. I look forward to getting the Omega back, due to commitments I have had to hire a car and it is costing me a fortune!

And dare I ask what is your hire car is? I hope it is not a Amica I had to use one as a loan car before, never again.

Hi Jason, I paid £300 + VAT for the box, but I was quoted £1450 + VAT for a recon one, so I am more than happy with a cheaper low mileage box, and 12 months warranty. My loan car is a bl@@dy awful Renault Megane auto, 2,000 miles on the clock and if anyone mentions Renault to me I will probably punch them in the mouth ,it really is the worst car I have driven, and over the last 42 years I have driven some cr@p!

Good luck with the Meega..

Hi, got my box from a company in Kirby, by Liverpool, called National Car Spares 0151 548 9833, but if you are keepng your Omega I was quoted £528.75 inc VAT and delivery, for a fully remanufactured unit with 12 months warranty from RS Transmissions, phone number 08452 749132. Also had a couple of other quotes, if you are interested give me a ring, pm me for my phone number.

Hi All, glad to report new auto box fitted and working a treat, new exhaust from cats back done yesterday, and crack of doom on drivers door repaired today, booked in for MOT next week. Just the aerial cable to replace from the join in passengers footwell to the radio, and all jobs then done, well probably for a least a week  ::)  :y
