It's another level of safety
like turning your wheel into the curb on a hill
Plus the OP's park pawl sounds shagged, so he needs to use the handbrake always  :D

Im pretty sure the only thing that could cause this is if the locking pawl has broken off. If its floating around inside the box, start ooking for another box or car.
Sounds scary hopefully it has worn down rather than snapped completely.

Hello all with my Omega Auto box in park the car still rolls forward surely the gearbox should lock it up. ....

When you say rolls forward, do you mean it will continue to roll or roll slightly before coming to a sudden stop  :-\
With the car in park it is possible to push it forwards it feels a little like a manual that is in gear but easier. Hopefully Paul (pawl) has worn down rather than snapped and is not lurking inside the autobox waiting to do some serious damage which of course will happen on the longest trip I take in the old girl as sods law decrees
